If your connection without the router is only 30 mbps, the speed with which you will connect will never be greater than 30 mbps. Adding the router adds latency, so yes a router will always slow your internet connection slightly. 11 mbps is still pretty fast considering when you are downloading something from a website the average speed is about 270 kbps. My wireless router connects my laptop at 54 mbps, it is a wireless N router, which is faster than a wireless G. That could be another factor.

Vizio xr100 connection slow

This router has a theoretical max throughput of 54Mbps which realistically well get you about 26-30Mbps between your computer and the router. Now if you have more than one person using it this will slow your speed down, also the further away from the router you are the more the speed degrades to a point of about 1Mbps at around 120 ft give or take depending upon router placement and anything solid in between you and the router. You also have to take into account that this router operates in the same frequency range as cordless phones, microwaves and anyone else's wireless network close to your own. Now compound this with the limitation of your ISP take your ISP's advertised speed and cut it in half this is about what you can expect in speed. You have some options, You can run an ethernet cable from computer to router to eliminate all the wireless problems, you can move the router to a more central location in your house/office or get a wireless extender to increase the signal, you can invest in a MIMO n router which overcomes a lot of the problems with g routers. Also you can invest in a better internet connection. Hope this helps a bit, let me know if you have questions. Also to test your speed you can visit speedtest.net

With the router hooked up getting on the internet is slow. hooked to cable one direct it's o.k.

Your Wireless speed is all down to the quality of the router and wireless card, and where you are in relation to the router.
Hooking up direct is always going to be faster.
You could experiment with the position of the router in the room.
Check your speeds wired and wireless, use www.speedtest.net.
You could buy a better antenna for the router

I've got the DIR-615 router. I've got it set up on with my PC, the PC gets internet through the modem, and the router handles the wireless access for the rest of the house. We noticed the internet speed...

I would make sure that you wireless security set up on the device. If you do not have wireless security setup on the device your neighbors may be using your intenet connection to download whatever they like. If you have wireless security setup and you are still having problems i would upgrade the firmware to the box. If that doesnt work i would ask D-Link they have great support. They can also help you with any of the above mentioned solutions.
Hope this helps please leave me feedback if it does :)

The internet speed drops more than 50% when I conect to the router

Do a firmware upgrade on your router to improve the speed and also adjust the MTU size on the router settings to 1400 that will also help in speeding up the connection using the router........

Can you hook up the router without hooking to a tower

Yes the Router can be hooked to a high speed modem like DSL or Cable, that high speed connection would go from the modem to the "internet" port of the router. Now the router would need to be configured if you need wireless, and then a temporary connection to a tower or laptop would be needed.

Download speed slows when router is on line.

If the router is offline then your not downloading anything, most down loads start fast then fall to a level your pc can handle, aka your connection speed.
