Hi,

The easiest would be to connect your desktop straight to your modem and verify that you can connect to the Internet. Do not use the LinkSys WRT54GS yet. Pop in the CD that came with the WiFi Router and run the setup wizard. Follow exactly on screen instructions. Verify that your desktop's networking is set to auto obtain IP address.

Alternately, you can try:
1. connect your desktop with a straight through LAN cable to Ethernet Port #1 of the WRT54GS;
2. set your desktop to use IP-192.168.1.10, Subnet Mask-255.255.255.0, Default Gateway-192.168.1.1;
3. open a browser and goto 192.168.1.1. use the LinkSys supplied username and password;
4. verify/configure/set the LinkSys to your preference;
5. for the time being do not use any security keyphrase, WEP WPA or MAC filter;
6. verify that your laptops could see the router's SSID;
7. verify that all laptops are set to auto obtain IP addresses;

If for some reason neither method will not work, pls post back with your modem's make & model.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

For my Dell Dimension 2400, I'm trying to use the Network Setup Wizard, but I can't because it says there is no hardware... Do I need a certain driver or program? I have an ethernet cable that is connected...

To connect your computer to the Linksys wireless router using the LAN card in your computer you need to install the LAN card driver. If you want to use a wireless connection with your Dell desktop, you will need to install a wireless card on your Dell plus the wireless card driver.
For the LAN card driver, download the driver from the Dell WEB site.

You can download the device drivers from Dell WEB site,the support download page. Make sure you select your model desktop or laptop,better still, type in the Service Tag number, it is printed on the label on thebottom of the laptop and on the back or sides of a desktop. (If the Service Taglabel is missing then go into the BIOS setting and on one of the BIOS pages,the Service Tag number will be displayed). This will open the page where thespecific drivers for your model computer are located. Also make sure you selectthe Windows of the drivers for your Windows operating system. Click on thislink to download the drivers: - http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen

I have a Compaq Vista Home Basic desktop set up to a Linksys router for my PS2, PS3 and Wii. I want to set up a second desktop computer (Windows98) that will be wireless also. How do I do that? Thank...

a win98 machine will likely have a rg-45 plug in the back, it's unlikely that may come with wireless network card. just use a straight through cable (the typical network cable) to physically connect the win98 machine to your linksys router, if you don't have any special security on your router, your win98 should be connected after a few seconds.

if you are getting a network card (possilby wireless):
install a network card on your windows 98 computer. if you're buying one make sure in the package says that it is supported by win98 (most are supported in win2k, xp, vista and 7 now so look closely before buying),

if you already have a network card and you are trying to install it, look for proper drivers from the network card manufacturer (drivers need to match model number and operating system(win98)). install your network card as per indicated in package or website if you are downloading drivers.

if you are connecting wirelessly, assuming that drivers are properly connected look in the network manager you just installed and look for the network name for your linksys router (whatever you configure that to be when your first install the linksys router) and attemtp to connect providing a password or any security requested.

in a nutshell that's what you need to do!

Can't get my wireless laptop to work. How do I connect the router to the computer?

First what type of router do you have? What is the model number?
Second ensure that your wireless switch (if your laptop has one) is set to on.
Go into view network connections and ensure your wireless card is enabled.
From you Desktop ensure that you are connected as described in the previous post.
Depending on your router make and model type in the ip address to the router.
Default for linksys is usually 192.168.1.1
DLink is usually192.168.0.1

From here it depends on your specific router.
There should be a wireless setup wizard.

The 2 different operating systems can run off the same router. Also check to see which type of security you are using I would suggest WPA2 if you do not see that listed you will need a firmware update.

How do i unlock the signal from my wrt54gs v.6 on the other computer

You will need to use the same WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) Key that you used on the other computer. Or, you can press the reset button (located on the back of your Linksys router) for at least 10 seconds while powered on to reset it to default (unsecured wireless network), and then readdress your router (by typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of a browser) to set up your security with a new WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) Key.

I hope this helps, and Good luck.
