Question about Poulan "Poulan" Push Mower

1 Answer

A friend has a poulan push mower and hit a pretty big rock with it, and now when you pull the pull cord to start it, it pulls hard and will not start. It is not the flywheel key sheered off, that is fine, so I am wondering if there is something else it could be or if the drive shaft got bent and it needs to be scrapped?

I took it all apart, checked everything over, replaced the blade, blade attachment kit w/shear key, checked the flywheel key, had to replace the safety cord and plug, now it idles great, but, so far, I have literally broken two of the blade attachment kids where it goes around the shaft, yet the shear key remains in tact.
Now I am not sure if it is a bad batch of attachment kits or something more, especially since the blade spins freely, no apparent bends in the shaft at all and does not hit the sides anywhere.
It sounds great when it runs without the blade on, so I hate to give up just yet.

Hi, it sounds like it's most likely that drive shaft. If the drive shaft gets dirty or dry you'll get the same problem with the pull cord being hard to pull, so more than likely that shaft got bent somehow and now it won't pull.

If you turn the mower over, can you turn the blade by hand? Maybe you can see if the shaft is bent as you try to turn it.

Pull Cord Stops...

could be valve needs set. if it isn't opening at the right time it wont release compression for it to start. it may be the shear key in the flywheel has sheared if you have hit something like a big rock or log or something causing it to die suddenly.

Pull cord binding when mounted on engine but not when removed from engine

When you assemble the Recoil Starter, push it down onto the blower easily and then pull the cord slowly. It should drop into position as you slowly pull the cord.

How to fix Mower cord stuck after hitting rock?

Pull the plug. MAKE SURE THE PLUG IS COMPLETLY REMOVED AND SEPARATED FROM THE MOWER!! Remove the cover with the pull start attached. see if you can turn it by the flywheel or the blade. If you can, you can just have the rewind repaired.
If not, then you have a probable bent or twisted crankshaft. Most likely not worth repair.

The engine is not started

Hi.
Check the blade... it is bent and causes a vibration. if it is not the blade then the motor shaft is bent and that is terminal...if that happened then the mower is junk...

Trying to fix the pull cord on my Poulan push mower... Removed the top cover and don't know what tool to use to remove the cover for the cord - any ideas?

Many mowers use large bolts, which you can remove with the right-sized nut driver. Do you see any bolts sticking out of the cover? If you don't have a nut driver, a socket wrench or even adjustable pliers will work.

Mower hit a big rock and stoped running

If you hit something hard enough to partially shear the key on the blade adapter, you did shear the key on the flywheel, and it will need to be replaced for the engine to run properly.

Have a recoil pull start mower that won't recoil

the starter clutch probably needs cleaning. It is located right on top of the fly wheel. Pull the the pull rope housing off and you can see it
