Question about Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

I have just purchased a westinghouse gas wall oven with separate electric grill, model GXN650SNG. After using it for about 1 week it has started switching itself off during operation. This is usually around 10mins but is now occurring more often. I can not get the end time to stay on zero, it keeps reading the same as the clock time, does this have anything to do with the oven not working. I have turned the power off and back on after 30mins to erase any error in the cook time/end time/timer/clock memory but this has not made any difference. I have contacted the service centre but have been informed there is a 3 week wait for service. As I do not wish to void my warranty I can not request service from elsewhere, however I need to use the oven each day. I would appreciate your help in solving this problem or at least receive some advice as to where I can go to for more efficient service. Kind Regards, Cindy Williams

we have had our stoves 1200 DFS for 6 years now. We have had the same problem throughout its life. We had the thermostats changed on both ovens 3 years ago and although improved a little, still wasnt reliable. It is now worse than ever, we cant rely on either oven to remain on. We are calling the service guy again, seems a shame to buy a new oven as otherwise its still like new??

Electric control panel on gas frigidaire stove

Hello Tim;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician, with a customer base of 25 families on the side. I love the work.

You did not post your range model number which is on a label either on the face of the oven when you open the oven door or on the side of the oven door.

Gas ovens have the same basic operational functions however, the components to initiate these functions is different depending on your model number.

1.) Ignitors - Your gas range has separate ignitors for the oven and the broil operation. So, failure of both at the same time is not the problem.

2.) Main Control Board - Rarely is this the problem if your burners are working.

3.) Gas Safety Valve - Has 2 lines coming off it. One to the top burners and one to the oven. Maybe, it happens, but it is rare.

4.) Main Gas Valve - Has two coils which may be bad. But, low probability.

5.) Thermocouple - High probability, if you only have one thermocouple for both the oven and broiler.

6.) Oven Control Board - This is a high probability. This is a smaller control board than your main control board. This board controls both your broiler and oven.
You can go into the following website, put in your model number, and get both diagrams and component part numbers.

You can go into this website and purchase from Sears, or you can record the model number, search the web and purchase a $200.00 part for about $40.00. Purchase used if you can. I do.

If you decide to go with the oven control board, make sure you ground yourself by touching bare metal. Static electricity will knock out a board. You should receive the board in a anti-static silver bag.

Remember, I do not have your model number, so I am guessing based on my professional experience.

I am purchasing a home with a kenmore elite gas range model # 790.3670--the seller doesn't seem to know if the oven is electric or gas. What is standard?

Electric or gas would be standard. If this is a stove like in the picture you provided, and is gas on top ... it is probably gas inside. You could always look to see if it has a burner or a calrod. See if there is a setting for Pilot or Igniter. Electric ovens don't need a pilot nor an igiter.

Of course, you could turn it on ... or pull it away from the wall to see what the connection is ... gas pipe or, if electric is involved, a very heavy electric cord - probably 50 amp 220 volts. If it has a small cord plugged into a standard wall outlet ... definitely gas fired. You say the top is gas so there will be a flex pipe for the gas ...

I searched Sears - they claim there is no such model.

Your agent should be able to tell by looking.

I am not sure of the model number of my Garland gas range (propane) I bought it in 1970 from a farmer who had purchased it at a restaurant sale. It is OLD. (so am I) I have had trouble for years with the ovens going off at times and not relighting immediately. The right oven especially.
In the last 35 years I have had the thermocouplers replaced twice, the safety valves twice, and new pilots twice. The last time these were replaced was 6 months ago by a repairman who said this was the problem. Very spendy. The ovens still would go out. I had a thought (and related it to the repairman) that perhaps there wasn't enough air circulation to the oven burners (the top burners and grill worked fine) He said there was plenty of air getting to the ovens. Two weeks later I had my son help me move the stove out another 4" from the wall and I have not had one bit of problem with the ovens since.
You can buy new fire bricks for the grill at a heating shop. I am having trouble with the thermostats now, they don't regulate the ovens to coincide with the settings. I will have them replaced next.
Every one thinks I should just get a new stove. No way. This is a great old stove, I love it.

Westinghouse wall oven(model#POH688W)digital display blank. Oven still operates ok.

I was baking something and the oven locked and the broiler came on.
It said F3 or something on the door. We could not get it to go off by
pushing off so we had to turn off the electricity.
The oven needs to be cleaned could that be why?

Oven failure

Panick Over!!

We had to pull out the oven and discovered the problem was a blown 3amp fuse in the plug at the back of the cooker! A bit of a scramble for a spare fuse but at least we're back in action!

GE Profile Spectra XL 44 gas oven

If you can smell the gas when you turn on the oven, it may be on a separate igniter that has gone bad. I would check this first. If you are not getting gas to the oven, there is possibly an issue with the supply line.
