If you are able to get into your external drive then remove the existing hard drive and add it as a slave inside your pc. You may have just damaged the internal connections of the casing for the external hard drive. If that doesn't work, then consider data recovery as in your first response.

If u know how to get inside encloser, carefully check to see if any wires coming from USB connector to chassie (inside) are "torned", pulled from socket conector. If u want to try something?
turn computer on, after the "dust" settles [screen on, program on, etc.] plug in h/d into usb. Wait to see if cpu see it. If not, turn h/d on one side and TAP!! lightly, on a hard serface with a soft lining , keep taping lightly.... and reboot computer. Try this on EVERY side of h/d. u may get the " heads " to align with the plantn (mispelled?) you know the spinning things that hold the information on the h/d.
IF it works, BACK UP !! your programs on onother h/d P R A N T O !!
