Question about Vintage Cycling

Open Question

My wife has a Autobike by CSA Classic Modl B2300. She never got a manual or PARTS LIST when she bought it used. The gears jamed and there appears to be s sping broken. We live in thr boonies (5 hrs. noorth of Buffllo) and the nearest Bike repair is 40 miles away. I called but they are not familular withthe type of auto shift and will not try to repair without thee manual. Where can we buy, downlod or get access to a copy? We are retired and can't afford to get another bike. Thanks, Ken & Lynne

I have the same bike, and it wont shift. The bike is at least 15 years old and is in otherwise pristine condition.

SOURCE: Can't find a Torker tri-star 3 wheeler to try out

In my experience there are very few adult tricycles that are not cheaply made under $1,000.00 . Keep searching on the net. Try and find one with a parts list, and what kind of tubing is used in the frame build. Good Chromoly tubing is recommended. Go to Parktool.com., and educate yourself on the cycling industry. Libraries often have back issues of cycling magazines.

SOURCE: we bought a schwinn bike lock last year.....of

Try putting a lot of pressure as to open the lock on either end of the coupling. Turn the numbered cogs one by one feeling for the one that has the most resistance. The one with the most resistance is the one that is keeping it locked. Move this one forward or back until you can no longer feel resistance. Keep doing this for all the cogs. This may take some time.
After (if) you get it apart, look down the barrel as you move the numbers to find where the cogs are aligned as to put the lock back together with out locking it; i.e. the barrel is free of cogs. This should be all the same number, like 5. Once you have this number and the barrel free of cogs, there should be a switch at the end of the numbered barrel that you can flip up and over to the other side of the opening. Flip the switch, choose a new number that you can remember, and flip it back. This should be your new combination number. The lock should work now.
Good luck

You, as the only one of us who can see the bike, need to focus on what is or is not happening to define the problem better. Chains engage gears. If not, maybe the chain fell off. Try web searching "chain fell off" or "chain fell off autobike classic" or any common simple symptom to get a feel for the various reasons it happens.

My classic k45ss leaks oil which drips from the verticle shaft, and my wife says it is making a "funny noise". Maybe it is low on oil, but I turned it on its side to find the model number, and it leaked...

Firstly I would take the head apart to find out what has failed. The oil you see should be a thick grease. Normally it is thick enough not to leak in this way. Has it been repaired and the wrong grease used? If it is making a funny noise it could be that one of the gears has failed. Most parts are easily available. Have a look at the parts list at:

My K45SS mixer makes a LOT of noise lately. I've seen a lot of ads for replacement gears. How do you replace the gears ?

brooksite, Sorry to hear you mixer is making a lot of noise... They shouldn't do that. Do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It will be messy but gratifying. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc. You may find that it's just one particular gear that's causing the noise.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com (this vendor had the best prices for my wife mixer's parts, but sadly they had to back order them, which was disappointing to SWMBO). Prices for the same part vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Also, here's a link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too. http://www.foodonthefood.com/food_on_the_food/2009/04/how-to-repair-a-kitchenaid-mixer-yourself.html
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

I have a 6qt professional kitchenaid mixer and that I bought last year and have just recently started to use it but it make a high pitched squeal that makes it almost unbearable for me to use. If anyone...

Diane,

It appears that you've got some internal transmission gear issues, and a situation similar to my wife's mixer, which we got new in Dec 2006. It could be as simple as the gears have become loose and are making different contact, hence the noise. The higher the speed, the louder, higher pitched sound you'll get. It may also be indicative of a potential gear failure (after all our increasing noise, the bevel gear broke and the mixer 'froze'). If your mixer is under warranty, contact Kitchenaid. If it's out of warranty, then take it apart and do a diagnostic exam of the gearing. Whatever you find you should be able to fix yourself. Be sure to have the Kitchenaid Part Manual (Part No. 8212278 Rev D) on hand if you attempt to disassemble yourself. It also lists all the parts so that you can determine, which parts, if any have failed. You'd think that the Kitchenaid name would warranty their mixers for a lifetime... but alas they do not. So much for quality in America today!
