I am smelling fuel. i traced line from tank to filter and cant see anything. there seems to be a trail of gas on ground directly in line with fuel line.where else could this come from

check evap vent tube location and inspect for cracks or mis placement

If you smell it at the rear of the truck. Most likely it is the vent solenoid stuck open. But it is best to see if the are gas trails on the tank. If so, it would be the seal for the sending unit in the tank.

Use a fuel pressure gage, not only check correct fuel pressure, see if fuel pressure will hold for a bit, with everything off. If the pressure drops like a rock, you have a pressure leak. Could be a fuel injector leaking? Where applicable, check fuel pressure regulator vacuum line, if it has gas in the line, the regulator is faulty.
Smell of the crankcase oil dipstick, does it smell like gas? If so, I wouldn't drive it till you fix the problem and change oil and filter as many times as needed to get rid of the gas.
How long since overall tune-up? 02 sensors sensors ever changed? Sometimes a faulty coolant temp sensor may cause the engine to run rich? Are there any driveability issues? Any applicable trouble codes? Don't replace anything unless your testing points in that direction. I can't see anything from here, as far as external leak, anywhere?

Its probably a rotten gas line from the pump located in the gas tank to the fuel injection unit. It would either be an easy fix to bring to a mechanic and get them to replace the line...or find the make and model online and google changing the fuel line for that particular model. There's always helpful hints online that make do little jobs like that so much easier.

LOOK UNDER CAR FUEL FILTER LOCATED FORWARD OF FUEL TANK. RELIEF FUEL PRESSURE BY DISCONNECTING THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR AT THE FUEL PUMP OR REMOVE FUSE.CRANK CAR UNTIL DIES FROM LACK OF FUEL. THEN REMOVE FUEL FILTER USE IN LINE WRENCH AND OPEN WRENCH.THIS KEEP YOU FROM DAMAGING FUEL LINES.WHEN INSTALLING FUEL FILTER THE ARROWS SHOULD BE POINTING IN DIRECTION OF FLOW.

Try tracing the fuel line from the gas tank to the fuel injection. If you are unable to find it then most likely the filter is located in the fuel tank with the fuel pump if equiped with an electronic fuel pump. Some fuel pumps are located in the tank, by the tank, or on the engine. either way if you trace the fuel line you should find it unless it is in the gas tank like I mentioned. Good Luck!

Open the gas door and remove the gas cap. This will help to alleviate the pressure in the fuel line.

Step 2 Crawl under the Bravado and trace the fuel line from the fuel tank. The filter is an in-line filter and attached to the fuel line.

Step 3 Unsnap the fuel inlet line from the filter. The filter is equipped with a quick-connect fitting that can be unsnapped and pulled off the piping of the filter.

Step 4 Remove the outlet line off the piping of the filter. This line can removed the same as the inlet line.

Step 5 Unbolt the mounting bracket holding the filter in place with a socket wrench. The bracket is held in place by one bolt.
Replacing the Fuel Filter

Step 1 Attach the new fuel filter to the mounting bracket and secure it to the frame. Tighten the bracket snugly with the socket wrench. Ensure the arrow on the filter is facing toward the front of the vehicle. The arrow indicates fuel flow direction.

Step 2 Snap the inlet line on the filter. Push the line on to the piping of the filter till it clicks in place.

Step 3 Connect the outlet line on the filter. This line will snap in place as well.

Step 4 Screw the gas cap back on to the fuel door. Close the gas door.

Step 5 Crank up the SUV and let it idle. Ensure there is no hesitation or stalling

There are, of course, many possibilities, but if you are smelling fumes it is likely that they are coming from the engine compartment. If you smell the fumes when you first start the car, it may be that one or more of your fuel injectors have begun to leak. They are the four cylindrical devices connected to the fuel rail down low in front of the cover that is marked PGM-FI. You would be able to see dampness on one or another if it is leaking. Another possibility is a leak in the fuel line itself regarding its several connections. Without a manual and pics, it is difficult to indicate the positions of many parts, but if you trace your fuel line backward from your fuel rail to the fuel filter and so on, you might be able to find a leak. A VERY small amount of fuel will allow you to smell it, so I wouldn't expect to see gas flowing out somewhere. Sometimes, simple overflow from filling the tank will give you a short-term odor.

I have never seen a fuel filter in the gas tank, fuel pump yes. To get to anything in the tank the tank has to be removed from the vehicle.

The fuel filter is located on the fuel feed pipe, between the fuel pump and the fuel injectors. It will be a Metallic tube like item about 4 inches long inline with your fuel supply (feed) line. If you can lift vehicle or get underneath it, then find your gas tank, find the line coming from top of your gas tank and trace it out. Filter is uaully within a few feet of the gas tank.
