LaCie 250GB Ethernet Disk Mini (300938U) Won't Power Up

I've had this unit for a few years. It was connected to a router via ehternet cable. About 6 months ago it stopped powering up. It would only power up when connected to a computer via USB. So I've had it hooked up that way since then. Now tonight the blue power light began flashing quickly. I powered down the computer and the LaCie unit also powered off. Upon starting up the computer the unit would not power up. The blue power light flashed very faintly but the power button will not start it up.

I had read somewhere that the power unit and/or on/off mechanism in it sometimes fails. Is there a way to repair that? Or assuming that it's dead is there is a way I can get the data off the disk? Could a professional repair man open it up and hook it up to another unit or computer and copy the data off it? Any hints or suggestions would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I also have a LaCie Ed Mini external ethernet/usb 250GB hard disk drive that will no longer power up.
I have had it for about 2 years and have had it under my lounge tv connected to my wireless router via an ethernet cable so that it operates as a wireless network hard drive.  I kept it on almost constantly so that I could access the files from anywhere in the house whenever required (i.e. without having to make the trip to the lounge to turn it on first).

I recently knocked it and it started to make a whirring noise that obviously did not sound right.  Therefore, I turned it off to see if that would remedy the issue.  Unfortunately this did not work as I can no longer turn it on.
When I press the power on button, the light (which indicates it is turned on) flashes on monetarily only.  The disk does not start up and it does not produce any sound/noise.

This sounds very much like the problem Johnsepu had.
Johnsepu - did you find a solution to your problem?  Did you manage to recover your data?  Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Very similar problem with my 500G Lacie Ethernet Disk. Won't power up, the blue light flashes momentarily, but disk nor fan won't start. Wrong side of warranty (2.5 years old) I took it apart and inserted the disk in my PC. Good news is that the disk works and is found by the PC, bad news is that formatting not recognized (assume this is due to Linux Lacie formatting), so can't retrieve data from it.

Could it be the AC Adopter? I measured the pins and output is 17.5V and 3.97V, far away from the specs on 15V and 5V. Can't find a place to buy a new AC Adapter...(Model ACU057-0512). Any help or suggestions apprectiated, thanks.

I had the same problem, but in my case with an Iomega 1Tb drive.
The problem lies in the power supply. I have 2 drives so changing the power supply solved the problem. I will now go to the shop to get a new one (warrenty).

Hi
External drives of this type are usually internal drives with case power supply etc. You should be able to open the box remove hard drive connect as a 2nd hard drive to PC either sata or ide depending on drive PC should recognise drive at boot up then you can access files and back up to CD, DVD, hard disk. If you are not comfortable doing this usually local PC repair shop will do for small charge. Assuming of course that the hard drive itself is not dead, just the power supply for the external case.
Hope this helps

I have the Lacie Minidisk Ethernet 500 GB that contains all my house PC backup. I both an USB Minidisk Lacie (1 GB) in order to use MySafe feature but it never worked.

Hello Elio,

Use MySafe to back up the files stored on the Ethernet Disk mini Home to an attached USB storage device. This way, if files on the Ethernet Disk mini are damaged or accidentally deleted, you can restore them to their original locations.
There are three main steps to using MySafe,Connecting an external USB hard drive,Backing up files to the external USB hard drive,Restoring files to the Ethernet Disk mini (if necessary)
Before you can back up files, you need to connect a hard drive to your Ethernet Disk mini via the USB port on the back. Use a hard drive that is USB 2.0 compatible.
While connecting an external hard drive make sure your Ethernet Disk mini is turned on and connected to your network.Turn on the external USB hard drive.Connect the external hard drive's USB cable to the USB port on the back of the Ethernet Disk mini, just like you would connect the external hard drive to your computer.Confirm that the drive is properly connected. Log in and click on the Administer HipServ link. Click on USB External Storage under System.
To back up files, navigate to the file or folder you want to back up to the external hard drive and click on the disk icon in the "Backup" column of the file list. When you back up files to MySafe, the Ethernet Disk mini duplicates the file path in MySafe so that everything you back up is organized in MySafe just as in its original location. So, if you copy a file from MyLibrary, a MyLibrary folder will appear in MySafe, with all folders leading to the backed up file.

Always click the Safely Remove Drive button on the USB External Storage before unplugging your MySafe external hard drive. Wait for the interface to change and for the Use Drive button to appear before disconnecting the USB cable from the Ethernet Disk mini. Failure to safely remove your external hard drive before disconnecting the USB cable can cause data loss and/or damage the drive. Always use the Safely Remove Drive feature when disconnecting an external hard drive.

Blue light come on when plugged into laptop but does not show on laptop

Hello,
this drive is mainly a Network drive. To use it with the USB, if you have a PC, you will need drivers that can be downloaded from LaCie. If you have a MAC, there are no way to use the drive with USB.
If you have a Router at home, connect the drive to it with an Ethernet cable and then use the LaCie Network Assistant to access it. It is easier.

Lacie ED mini v2 won't start up.

I had the same problem twice, but it was the power adapters each time that were causing the problem. It wasn't the unit itself. Lacie replaced the power adapters and it worked fine.

I can't connect to Edmini via LAN nor USB. LAN computer doesn't detect then I tried to check edmini from browser then I get this message /www/cgi-bin/public/sharelist: line 246: cannot create temp file...

Just contact www.lacie.com great support. there answer for my drive was to upgrade the drive version and to reboot the drive. Maybe the last thing is enough. For me it worked.

If necessary update driver http://www.lacie.com/nl/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10156

Follow the procedure below to reset the Network Space to factory defaults:
  1. Move the power switch to the OFF position. Wait for the drive to shut down.
  2. Turn ON the drive.
  3. Within about 3 seconds, flip the switch OFF and On several times.
  4. Immediately turn it ON
If the light flashes quickly, the unit is resetting itself. Attempt to connect to the drive again after about 1 minute using the default username and password (by default, they are both admin.)

Disk will not power down. Has vanished from my computer, but router IDs it.

Well according to LaCie's support when the power button is failing to work and the fan becoming inconsistent it is due to the power supply failing.

This is because the OS controls the power button and if it cannot boot fully because of a power problem, then functions of the drive are turned off, including the power button.

They are going to send me a new one.

How to install a linksys router to my desk top for my wireless laptop

1. plug in the router
2. connect the router to your DSL or Cable Modem using the supplied ethernet cable
3. connect the router to your computers ehternet port with a second piece of ethernet cable

you can use catagory 5 ethernet cable , or catagory 6

Most linksys routers have 4 to 5 ethernet ports to connect computers to.

One of the ports will be marked as the one to connect to your DSL or Cable Modem

Usually when looking at the back of the router the WAN port will be located to the far left.

Thank you for choosing FixYa!

Hard drive won't start up at all

Knowing LaCie the drive might need to be connected to a computer, or need a new battery.  If it is not the battery, try connecting the drive to your computer via ethernet or USB  and you might be able to get the data off of it
