Hi there,

Here is what you can do to try and retrieve your songs. First of all, the problem may be that there is a problem with the power supply or the cables inside the unit are damaged or not making good contact.

I would suggest that you open the drive and carefully remove the actual hard drive from the enclosure without touching the under-side of the hard drive. Then turn off your computer (desktop computer) and open it, you should be able to remove the right hand side cover from the case. Look for another hard drive that is in the computer, there should be an extra cable much like the one that is going to the hard drive in your computer, plug this into the hard drive and plug the power cable into it (power cable should also look like power cable that the hard drive that is currently in your desktop computer has). Then start up your computer and you can then access all the data.

If there is no extra openings for your hard drive, you will see probably two hard drives, remove the one that is the slave drive, you can tell if it is the slave drive by looking at the jumper found on the back of the drive, on the top of the drive, there will be a diagram showing you how to set it as a master or slave and this is how you will tell that it is the slave or the master. Make sure you take the slave drive out and then put the other hard disk which came out of the enclosure into the place where you just took the slave hard drive out of.

If you have done this and started your computer but the hard drive doesn't show in "My Computer", the hard drive is probably damaged, what would have probably happened ion this case is that the needle which hovers above the magnetic disc inside the hard drive itself may have fallen onto the disc so it can no longer read the data. You can still get your data off of it but you cannot do it yourself, you will have to take it to a professional technician to do it for you because it has to be done in a 100% dust proof room which an ordinary person probably doesn't have. He will then open the hard drive and place the needle back to where it is supposed to be so you can once again access your data.

Please note: If your hard drive is new, it might still be under warranty so i suggest that you take it in to get it repaired because if you open the drive yourself, the warranty will be voided and you will not be able to get t fixed for free.

Thank you for using FixYa! Have a great day and please remember to rate this solution.

Best regards,

When I woke up this morning, the light is off ofthe Lacie drive and it is not working. I have tried inplugging both to the power and also to the computer. Nothing seems to be happening.

Hello,
first, check the power supply. If the light on it is of a bright stable green and there are no sound from it, the power supply should be healthy and we will turn toward the drive, else replacing it should fix your issue..
Sometimes, you can smell a "burn" smell near the connectors ar the back if things really went bad and the interface fried. If your drive operates on a smoking environment, you might not notice it as much. Opening the casing and doing a visual exam of the interface to look for cracked chips and black burnt marks would allow us to confirm or not that the interface fried. If it appears that it did fry, verify the hard drives electronic boards for the same signs. If they seem healthy, replacing the interface should get your drive running again.
If there are no sign that it fried, check the power switch to see if the soldering is loose or broken in some areas. Do the same verification with the power connector. If all is good on that side, replacing the power module or the whole interface card should bring power back to the drive.

Same here. I pulled the drive from the case and swapped it with another and the drive works fine. Must be the control board inside the case. Where can we find the replacement board?

My Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB hard drive was working fine, until the power cord was removed accidentally. Now I can't get any computer to recognize the drive when I plug it in the USB...

Is the power light on, if not replace the power supply.
I f you have light then your hard drive is shot or the circuit inside the box is fried.
If it is out of warranty and you have another Western Digital Sata drive handy you can swap it with the one inside to see if the drive is bad.
Good luck.

West Dig 500 G essential ed mybook unrecognized as drive by comp

Hello,

If the drive is still go and they can get data off of it then it would mean the power supply is what is bad. All that you need to do is get an external drive case and put your drive in it. The case we use here in our shop is made by Eagle electronics and can be purchased from Newegg. You can get information and a review of the case here:

http://www.ccl-la.com/product_reviews.htm

The case only runs $25.00 and you won't have to pay for any data transfer or any tech services from Fry's

I hope this helps.

Western DIgital 500 GB litght flashes but not working

I discovered that the wrong power adapter was plugged into the Western Digital My Book which is why it was blinking two times a second and fried it. Plugged in a 24v instead of the 12vThe tech support person at Western Digital ignored the information of the blinking light. I fixed the hard drive issue by removing the cover (no easy task) and installing it as a slave drive on my computer. I am backing up that hard drive using another Western Digital My Book.

I would suggest to anyone who has the problem of frying their Western Digital hard drive to make it a secondary drive on your computer. My item was under warranty, but all they would have done is replace the product and not recovered the data. They gave me references on whom to send the problem hard drive to.

There are a couple of videos on youtube showing how to remove the cover. I wound up using credit cards and a DVD to pry it apart. I was fearful that a screwdriver could create noticeable tampering.

Fried HD?

Yep, it's probably fried, a little too much juice went in.
While the drive itself might be ok, the external casing is another story.

Try opening the case and removing the HD and plugging that in on your PC directly as a slave drive.

Drive won't mount and makes slow clicking sound

A power supply failure can cause this; I've just been through it myself. If you have access to another LaCie drive, try its power supply on the "failed" one and see if it works.
