First of all you check the version of your computer, if it is able to support for latest veriosn computer, then took latest nero software from your friend or to market and then install it. I think your have been solved now.

I want to burn photos onto a CD. The box I have

You can burn any type of file on a dvd-rw disc. However your cd burner must be dvd-rw not cd-rw. To verify your device open my computer (on most pc's) you will see drive c (your hard drive) and drive d which is your cd rom it should say dvd-rw.
You may also need dvd burning software for more information about this click here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/expert/jones_02november25.mspx

Trying to burn some files to a memorex cd-rw. no computer will recognize that a cd is in the cd drive, even though one is in there. might be a formatting issue, but can't get any software to recognize cd,...

You might want to try the nero lite software. Most of these so called softwares do not reconize some burners. There is a site that tells you these problems. Try to google your (lets say hp cd) and then say EX: hp cd drive (try to use a model)..+not recognizing my burner, don't use spaces in the query.
Nero is a good burning software that enables most burners to be recognized.
If you have had Roxio .. this software is not very friendly to some of the burners out there. If you have this software get rid of it, uless you have the original disk or it come with oem on the restore disc.
PS Use Nero Lite it works the berries!

Dell 4600 dimension cd-rw@cd-rom drivers

There is no need of any driver or software. First check your BIOS(i.e. keep jabbing the DEL key when you start ur PC, able background with letters in white will come up. Go to The Chipset/IDE Drive option where it shows which Hard Disk is and see if it recogonize you CD ROM/RW) Otherwise when this screen appears(BIOS) simply chose default settings(F%) or Fail-Safe and save & exit(F10). Continue boot-up Then open my Computer to see if it shows your CD ROM/RW, if not open the side panel of your CPU and locate the ROM/RW Bay. At its rear end are two sets of cable 4 for power & a 20/40 pin where a whitish flat cable(strip) is connected. Gently press all such that there are no loose connections. Reboot and now u should have solved ur problem....sodeep

Please insert a disk into drive

You can only copy files to a blank disk by using programs like NERO or by using a re-writeable disk like DVD-RW which you can format and use it like a hard drive. You need also burner not an ordinary DVD or CD player.

Saving on CDom

cdroms are read only (cd-rom stands for compact disc read only memory). To save to cd, you would need a cd burner and a writeable cd.

How do I burn a CD with my pictures, then show them on my computer? Can and how do I delete the pictures on the computer?

Your question was not quite clear "then show them on my computer"

1.) You can use a third program software like nero.
To use nero, you have to "purchase" it first, then install nero, then open "Nero burning ROM" application usually either under
"program files\Ahead\Nero\Nero Burning Rom\nero.exe"
or
Program Files\Nero\...\Nero Burning Rom\Nero.exe

Select the option CD-ROM Iso, then select multi session(if you want to add pictures later) or no multisession (if you dont want to add pictures later)::: For example, your CD takes abour 700MB of data, but you only have 10 pictures @ 30MB or so then you most likely to use multisession.::: Then click on the "new" button to start compiling your cd.

Then you can add your files into your compilation. You can give your CD a name by either double clicking on the little disk icon to your right in the first nero and changing the name OR by selecting "File" from the menu, then selecting the "Compilation properties" option, then click on the "Label" tab, and change your cd's name there.

All you have to do now, after you have given your cd a name and added files to the compilation is to find and click on the "burn" icon located in the nero bar below the "file, edit, new menus".

2.)If you have installed nero, you can also use Nero smart start 2 complile your CD. Benefis: Much quicker and easier to use.

Cannot copy files to DVD disks

First of all you should have the recording tab ON. Have you tried burning using Nero instead of dragging and dropping? This may solve the problem.

However, if you prefer to drag and drop, try setting the write speed to a slower setting, even if the dvd burner has faster write capabilities.

1. I do not think it is a hardware issue.

2. You can try replacing the IDE cable, but if you can read the contents of the disk it does not suggest a communication issue between the drive and mobo.

3. I do not think that the burning software is to blame, when you drag and drop you are actually using a windows based burning software that is installed with the operating system.

4. set up your files to burn through nero, let the software do the work.

I had the same issue with my dvd burner, although slightly different error messages, solved it by using nero instead.
