SOURCE: Replacing a relay switch/kit on a maytag refrigerator MSD2432GR

Wow! I am confused also. It sounds like it is more complicated than the ones I use. Can you send me an image of the relay and the terminals on the compressor?
I can tell you that the live wire ( wire with electricity) is the one that goes on the common terminal, that is the one that it at the top of the trangle formation, unless the formation is upside down then it goes on the bottom. Then the other neutral wire goes on the run terminal which is usually on the right if the triangle formation is right side up. Usually the neutral wire is white. So
try putting the white wire on terminal 3 and the orange on the top (or bottom) terminal. If there are any wires left over that you think need to be connected I would need to see an image.

How many time it take to get colder when you plug it after 1 month because my maytag making click after 30 sec click after 5 min click and the condenser is very hot the fan work what appen

Hi,

Welcome to FixYa.

I suspect by your description the fridge either has a faulty overload protector or the compressor itself is seized. Hence when the overload reset's the fan starts ( as it should when the compressor runs ) however the overload then trips and the fan stops while the compressor never starts, thus "clicking" and not cooling.

If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ll try to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician.

I don`t know the age of your fridge, but I should mention...

** Most of the Maytag fridges have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air.**

If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor.

On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

2234770.jpg

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

ffd3e9e.jpg
With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding=not good !

If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1 starter kit.

i.e.

775ec2d.jpg

The above package contains info and hardware on how to connect it.

NOTE : the HS410 ( 3 in 1 ) should be considered just a temporary "fix" as opposed to an actual "repair" in should not be relide on for long term reliability or safety, but rather the factory replacemnet part 8201786... i.e.

macmarkus_95.jpg

The above start device kit contains instructions on "how to" install kit. Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the reply and a testimony to your inquiry you received here at FixYa.

Thank you and good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

Refrigerator is not cooling. Compressor comes on than off after 20-30 seconds

you need to replace the ptc overload relay replaced on the compressor as this component is getting weak and is cutting out,it uses temperature vs. heat to protect the compressor from a no start or when the compressor cant operate on the run windings and overheats, then this ptc overload relay cuts out the compressor to protect it,it will keep trying to start the compressor till the ptc burns out,it just unplugs off the compressor and a new replacement plugs back in

HOW DO YOU REPLACE A START RELAY SWITCH ON A FRIGIDAIRE SIDE BY SIDE MODLE FRU26SA

Power off i.e unplugged
Open the back
Remove retaining clip on wiring side of compressor plastic cover.
NOTE wiring connections to terminals on the OLD relay. 1, 2 4 4 ect... make a simple wite color to terminal number sketch.
PULL off PTC relay WITH terminals by pulling HORIZONTALLY (Usually to the left / 9 O'clock position)
NOTE the thermal overload comes off WITH the PTC relay.
Remove wire from Thermal overload terminal and transfer the thermal overload to the new PTC relay.
Slide NEW PTC relay onto compressor terminals
Transfer remaining wires from OLD PTC to the correct terminal on the new PTC relay.

TEST compressor start before installing cover... PLUG in unit

After the test unplug the unit... reinstall the plastic cover and wire clip.

Reinstall back panel

Return unit to service.

Bad overload relay

The compressor is usually fitted with a thermal overlload switch. It is usually secured to the compressor with some sort of spring mount so it maintains physical contact
The parts guy was probably talking about a hard start kit. They typically are a universal fit, and come with instructions. Be sure to check the electrical supply to the outlet for the fridge. Excessive voltage drop when it tries to start will cause such problems, and will eventually cause damage to the compressor.

Ive attached the new relay kit. I am stuck as to where to plug the white jumper wire on the relay as there is not a terminal 1 male component and i dont know what the 3/16 terminal on old harness is

The smaller wire terminal , goes on the right side of the relay , ( with the terminals faceing you ) , the blue , to the overload , and the orange , to the left side of the relay .

I have replaced a compressor in a maytag fridge model MBB2256GES and i have a blue wire and a white wire i know they go to the compressor and ther are three pins on the compressor what goes where

The start component assembly goes to the three pins. You have to have this assembly. Always shipped with a new compressor.

The 2 wires go the start kit, after it's installed onto the compressor. Doesn't matter how you use the blue and white wires. Just connect them to the relay start kit, where the old ones were.

NOT COOLING

HI, since the unit still has power, this will rule out any capacitor issues and failed evap/condenser assembly as well. The most likely issue here is that the compressor has failed.

There are many components that will cause this failure and, here is a run down.

COMPRESSOR PARTS

Starter device component
Compressor relay & overload component
PTC Relay
Compressor tank.

If this fridge is a bit up in its age, i would recommend purchasing a new thermostat and, i would also recommend purchasing a complete compressor replacement kit. this kit has every component and part you will need to restore the cooling abilities of your fridge. it will fix this issue.

The compressor kit will cost $262.00 and the thermostat will cost $55.95.

Please rate and god bless:)

Problem has returned to Maytag fridge

I note this is a very old post. The compressor is not starting and what you were hearing was the PTC relay energizing followed by the KilXon thermal overload kicking off the compressor start sequence. What happens is that the PTC relays sometimes get a heated contact. Due to the weakened state of the contact it can cause a buzz. Even with a goo PTC relay you would hear the compressor buzz if it was not starting. In that case the run capacitor may have failed or the compresor rotor is internally locked at which point the start cycle will repeat every 3 to 4 minutes as the thermal overload cycles and the compressor will not start.

Thanks for choosing FixYa
