Hello,

Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs. Before repairing the door springs, unplug the dishwasher or shut off the power at the fuse box or breaker panel to avoid an electrical shock hazard.
The door opens and closes with the aid of springs. If the springs (or the cables that connect them on some dishwashers) break, the door will drop open hard. The door will also be heavier when closing. If the door drops open, it may also bend the door hinges out of shape resulting in a door that does not close properly and possibly leaks.

When replacing the springs or cables, all of them should be replaced at the same time.
To access the door springs and cables remove the lower panel located beneath the door. The panel is usually held in place with two screws either above or below the panel. It may be necessary to first open the door to the dishwasher to get to the screws over the panel, then close the door to remove the panel.
There are two common types of spring assemblies. One type connects the springs from a hook on the dishwasher cabinet of to a tang on the door hinge .

The other end attaches to the frame. There is a row of notches, The further back in the row you attach the spring, the more tension there is on the door. I recommend replacing the springs on each side if one has broken, the other one is likely to fail in the near future.
You can get the parts from any whirlpool parts dealer or order from sears.com, or repairclinic.com.
Post back if you need further help.
Thanks, Mike

Some models have 2 screws 1/4" at the top of the lower panel .
open the door and look down on each side there may be a 1/4" screw remove both and then down at the bottom on front panel.

or if that does not work and if you can remove the mounting screws securing the dishwasher to the counter and as long as the floor is not tiled or up above the legs you can slide out the dishwasher a little and replace springs.

Check the opposite side for the exact location of the spring

Falls open when? This unit wom't operate unless the door is secure so I assume you mean the door assist springs are disconnected or broken and the door just falls heavily to the open position after you unlatch it from the closed position. Try these, part 18 here

should attach to frame in an easy to distinguish hole or slot and to door hinges, number 2 here

Very loud screetch when you open and close the door.

This can be difficult to correst. The door hinge attaches to a lever, connested to a length of cord, connected to a spring. Tight installations can sometimes cause insulation to get scrunched next to all than mechanism. The minimum space to install is 24x24x34, front to back, side to side. more is actually a little better ( are you listening, builders?) High end dishwashers have thicker insulation and it is harder to squeeze it into its space. The insulation tends to catch on every splinter, screw tip, etc. You may have to pull the dishwasher and grease up the hinge and check that all insulation is away from the mechanism. Hope this helps,

Ken

Door hinge springs broken...how to fix myself?

very easy but you have to slide it out
you need the door links part number 1059756 you can go to repairclinic.com to get them
to the left and right you will see a metal spring with a rope attached to it. the rope is what always breaks
when you get the new peices make sure and install the whole kit because it is a upgrade.

The door to the dishwasher is very hard to close. The door also falls down to the floor which makes the carriage/basket fall down as well.

sounds like one or both of your door links are broken check your hinges. you should ahave a large spring and a piece of rope that attaches to the door. let me know if this helps you

Kitchenaid Hinge tensioner

It is aall exposed on the outside of the unit. Discconecct the water, remove the two set screws attaching the unit to the counter, slide it out and you will see the damage left or right. The white plastci piece slips off over the metal clip and you re-attach the string, apply pressure to the spring and slip the platci piece back over the metal and you are done. You will spend more time removing the unit than repairing it.

The door flops open as the rope has broken. I have the replacement part but need a diagram to show how to replace the part. Where can i find the diagram?

Documented in the manual...The plastic part goes on the metal hinge on the door...follow the rope down to the top wheel (clockwise and around) to the bottom wheel (counterclockwise and around), attach to the spring.

Kitchenaid DW door spring

The door hinges are spring-loaded. One or both hinges have failed.
Items 2 and 3 at the link below are the parts that are needed.

I am not aware of a service manual posted on the internet.
Hope this helps! Please post back with what you end up doing, OK?
Good Luck!

Door drops when opened

your door's hinge link is broken

Pull your dishwasher from under counter (you may need to disconnect hoses and power connnections, so turn off power at the circuit breaker). Look for the broken rope-like item and replace it. Use the other side as an example on how to re-install the link. Attach link to spring, hook spring back into frame/chassis, threaded link through pulleys, attach other end of link onto door then reinstall dishwasher under counter. My replacement link package came as a pair, so replace both at the same time. The other side may still be attached and functioning, but will most likely show signs of wear.

Broken door spring on kitchenaid dishwasher

kitchenaid should be made to recall all of these dishwashers that have that string holding door since it could pose a hazzard to children. They should be made to put in a metal cable at no cost to the consumer
