According to the service manual for problems with light print image, the cause can be the Developers or High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS). Other possible causes are given as: Developer roller is stained when the toner or developer cartridge is almost consumed. Ambient temperature is below 10 degrees Centigrade. Bad contacts with the HVPS or abnormal output from the HVPS. To replace the Developers you would need to purchase a replacement Imaging Kit CLP-R300A. Any problems in the HVPS would require a factory repair.
Did you purchase a new OEM HP toner or a refilled or remanufactured toner. It is possible that the chip is bad on the cartridge in which case if it is a true HP cartridge have them replace it. If you purchased 3rd party go after the vendor to replace it.
this warning comes early to give you time for purchasing new toner, it is still enough toner for about 100 to 150 outprints in the cardrige, this depense on how the print is used by % if you have always a full page the toner might not last for 1000 prints.
The toner may be low or nearly run out. Remove the toner cartridge and give it a shake in a horizontal position, then replace the toner cartridge in the printer. This may give you a few more prints. If not you need to replace the toner cartridge with a new Canon toner cartridge, or purchase a re-manufactured toner cartridge for your model laser printer. These re-manufactured laser cartridges are approx. half the cost of a new toner cartridge.
Replace the toner:
Always use the smart card provided with the new Print Cartridge when replacing the cartridge. The smart card contains the information necessary to reset the level of Toner. Replacing the cartridge without using the smart card may result in the consumable management system being inaccurate.
Insert the smart card provided with the new Print Cartridge into the smart card reader. A "Change Toner?" message will be displayed.
Press the [OK] button. An "Open Front Cover Replace Toner" message will be displayed.
Push on the left and right side of the Front Cover and simultaneously lower the cover.
Grasp the handle on the Print Cartridge, and then raise and remove the cartridge from the machine.
Unpack the new cartridge, and then insert the cartridge into the machine.
Close the Front Cover. A "Have You Changed the Toner?" message will be displayed.
Press the [OK] button. A "Please Wait" message will be displayed while the machine reads the smart card, and then a "New Toner Remove Card" message will be displayed.
Remove the smart card from the reader and dispose of the card as normal office waste.
NOTE: If the smart card has been used with a previous installation of a Print Cartridge, a "Remove Card Already Used" message will be displayed. The smart card can only be used once. Make sure to use the card that came with the new cartridge.
There is a card that should come with a cartridge. It slides into the slot on the side of the machine to reset the toner cartridge count.
I don't know of a way to reset the count without a card.
Wish I had a better answer, but the card is encoded to reset the machines toner count in the software.
