Disc error means the drive is not able to read the disc. Usually due to a problem with the lens/laser assembly. Did you try using a dvd lens cleaner to see if that solves the problem? Make sure you use a branded one. It brought my DVD writer back from dead many times!

First check if the disk drive icon it is still present in the My computer folder..if it isnt than go to the device manager by right click on my computer ..than properties.../hardware ..device manager ..
In here click on disk drives..and take a look at the device ..if it is in yellow with an ask sign on it , it means that the driver is missing ..for it ...
you can right click on the device ..and choose driver update ..and go with the wizard that starts..but instead of automatically choose manually choose a driver ..(the bottom choice) ..and after that choose from a list ..and when windows displays the list with drivers for dvd writers..get the one that it is most likely ..(the same manufacturer at least )
this will probably bring it back into the drives list in my computer .If the device is not opening the tray ..and no light is lit ...than better open the computer and check the power supply ..and the connection to be ok ...
if the tray pops out ..but the disk is not read..and even after the troubleshooting of the driver it is not getting back ..it is probably been attacked by a virus ..and you will need to reinstall it completely to get it back ...
Lately I had many problems of this nature..with a driver eater..that affects these **** drives...but a complete re-installation with a boot-able installation disk ..and the complete format of the Cdrive ..will get it back ..
If you have a operation system boot-able cd ..to check this issue it is enough to insert it ..and restart to see if it is booting from cd ...if it asks on restart to press any key to boot from cd ..do it ..and let it load a few files..this means that the disk unit is ok ...stop it by restarting ..and take the installation from the start and go for it ..but first save any files that you need from the C drive to other partition ..
if teh boot-able disk is inserted (the one you use for reinstalling the operation system ) ..but it is not asking to press any key to start booting from cd ..than go to bios by pressing F10 on start (immediately ) ..and in there select the boot order...from the advanced panel... and put the first boot device to be the cd ..and second the Hdd..and save changes with F10 ...
this will only kick in when a boot-able disk is inserted..and do not affect the normal boot of the computer ..
In short ..I believe that the computer has been affected by a virus that wiped the disk units driver ...and to be sure it is back ..you have to use a boot-able disk with the installation of teh operating system ..and make a clean install..
if you do not have the drivers for it ..to use after installation ...they are available on these site ..

I never asked ..is the disk drive stopped working or just the light scribe function ??

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Aug 29, 2010

If the disk drive is nonfunctional but it still eject the tray ..just reinstall the operation system and will work for sure ...I told you ones before..there is a virus that attacks the disk drive driver software ..and by reinstalling the operating system you get rid of it and the driver for the dvd writer is built in windows...

  • rasafka Aug 30, 2010

    just the lightscribe stopped working

  • Catalin Turcu
    Catalin Turcu Sep 03, 2010

in this case try to reinstall the software that you use for it ...it might be something from the software ..cause usually if it broke it goes off with all functions ..not just that ..so it might be ok ..but to have error from the software or the type of disk you use..

If it was working recently, then should be a problem with the lightscribe software. I hope you still have the lightscribe software (it should be included with the cd that came with the desktop, if you don't have it any longer or can't find it, then click here to download), if so, please uninstall the lightscribe and reinstall it. Not only that, you also need to run a registry cleaning using a Registry Cleaner like CCleaner (click here to download). Download and install the small tools, run the Registry cleaner after the lightscribe is uninstalled. Restart the computer and reinstall the program.

If this doesn't help, let me know. Maybe you need to check the IDE/SATA settings from the BIOS.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

If the last reply is to my solution, follow the steps below:

Shut down your computer, open the case and change the sata port of the DVD writer (connect it on another sata port), now reboot your computer and go into Bios settings (F1 or F2 or Delete, varies from pc to pc) and restore the settings to Default, (you'll see something like "Restore Optimized Default" or similar with "Default...") and press F10 or save the changes and restart your computer, let it boot into normal mode. Now check the Drive. If it's not successful. Restart you computer once again and go to Bios settings, and look for IDE configuration sub menu (should be in the Advanced Menu) and check the settings, if necessary change it to IDE not AHCI also browse into AHCI configuration and change it to IDE or disable it. Now save the settings and boot the system once again.

It's also necessary try with deferent make of Media (CDs or DVDs), Lightscribe doesn't support all medi type, means all Brands of CDs and DVDs.

Please response by clicking "Add a Comment" below my posts. Otherwise I'll not consider the reply is mine. It makes me confused whether the reply is for me or for other experts. Thanks.

That error signals the fact that the chipset can't communicate with the optical unit. Open the desktop and unplug the data cable, reboot, wait 5 minutes and run a registry cleaner - the one in CCleaner will do, shut down the pc, reconnect the data cable and reboot. If even after that the unit still doesn't work then it's dead - replace it.

Exactly how i said it: open the desktop (unscrew the 2 safety screws and take out the side panel), pull out the cables from the back of the dvd-writer, reboot and go tohttp://www.ccleaner.com/ to install the program, open the program, click on the registry button and run it, close the pc , reconnect the cables - they go in only in one way so don't force them.

  • Azrael SRL Aug 28, 2010

Leave the setting the way it is - if you mess with it the hard disk will not be recognized and Windows will just not load, the end result being that you will have to reinstall it.

If even after all of that the writer isn't recognized then it's dead - replace it.

  • Azrael SRL Aug 28, 2010

Sorry but i have to say it again: your dvd-writer has died - the dust has settled on the lens in so large quantities that it has blocked the laser.

  • rasafka Aug 28, 2010

but why can i burn and watch dvd's but just cant do the lightscribe ?

  • Azrael SRL Aug 28, 2010

The lightscribe requires that the laser emits more power than normal - this extra power is absorbed by the dust.

Hp pavilion dv4-1225dx wont read discs

Insert the DVD burner software that comes with your SATA burner. This will have the driver or go to Windows Updates and see if the driver software is there for you to download. The problem could be a region set or it is not populated.
I have had to set my region setting to 1 which is the US then populate it. And make sure the right driver was installed for my device if you do not have the driver disc or files go to hp.com and download it from the support and drivers section of the manufacturers web site it will be there. Make sure that you have the right info typed in when hunting drivers.
If it is a third party addition you can also get the driver files from Lightscribe they will also have the drivers that is about all you do. John

Try reading a disc from it. If that won't work, your drive is dead. Try upgrading your drivers, or upgrading the lightscribe software.

What does "multi layer support" mean. Does it write multi layer discs? or is it able only to read them? Also, what is a lightscribe?

Multi-Layer support means the drive can Read/Write a Dual-Layer discs.

Lightscribe means you can create a label on a disk.

Lightscribe

You can get colored blank discs, but the Lightscribe only "prints" in shades of black. You will need to get Lightscribe compatible discs, which are just like "normal" cd's / dvd's with the exception of having a special coating on the one side.

You can visit Lightscribe's website for complete tutorials.
