Question about HP Pavilion a705w PC Desktop
Disc error means the drive is not able to read the disc. Usually due to a problem with the lens/laser assembly. Did you try using a dvd lens cleaner to see if that solves the problem? Make sure you use a branded one. It brought my DVD writer back from dead many times!

First check if the disk drive icon it is still present in the My computer folder..if it isnt than go to the device manager by right click on my computer ..than properties.../hardware ..device manager ..
In here click on disk drives..and take a look at the device ..if it is in yellow with an ask sign on it , it means that the driver is missing ..for it ...
you can right click on the device ..and choose driver update ..and go with the wizard that starts..but instead of automatically choose manually choose a driver ..(the bottom choice) ..and after that choose from a list ..and when windows displays the list with drivers for dvd writers..get the one that it is most likely ..(the same manufacturer at least )
this will probably bring it back into the drives list in my computer .If the device is not opening the tray ..and no light is lit ...than better open the computer and check the power supply ..and the connection to be ok ...
if the tray pops out ..but the disk is not read..and even after the troubleshooting of the driver it is not getting back ..it is probably been attacked by a virus ..and you will need to reinstall it completely to get it back ...
Lately I had many problems of this nature..with a driver eater..that affects these **** drives...but a complete re-installation with a boot-able installation disk ..and the complete format of the Cdrive ..will get it back ..
If you have a operation system boot-able cd ..to check this issue it is enough to insert it ..and restart to see if it is booting from cd ...if it asks on restart to press any key to boot from cd ..do it ..and let it load a few files..this means that the disk unit is ok ...stop it by restarting ..and take the installation from the start and go for it ..but first save any files that you need from the C drive to other partition ..
if teh boot-able disk is inserted (the one you use for reinstalling the operation system ) ..but it is not asking to press any key to start booting from cd ..than go to bios by pressing F10 on start (immediately ) ..and in there select the boot order...from the advanced panel... and put the first boot device to be the cd ..and second the Hdd..and save changes with F10 ...
this will only kick in when a boot-able disk is inserted..and do not affect the normal boot of the computer ..
In short ..I believe that the computer has been affected by a virus that wiped the disk units driver ...and to be sure it is back ..you have to use a boot-able disk with the installation of teh operating system ..and make a clean install..
if you do not have the drivers for it ..to use after installation ...they are available on these site ..

If it was working recently, then should be a problem with the lightscribe software. I hope you still have the lightscribe software (it should be included with the cd that came with the desktop, if you don't have it any longer or can't find it, then click here to download), if so, please uninstall the lightscribe and reinstall it. Not only that, you also need to run a registry cleaning using a Registry Cleaner like CCleaner (click here to download). Download and install the small tools, run the Registry cleaner after the lightscribe is uninstalled. Restart the computer and reinstall the program.
If this doesn't help, let me know. Maybe you need to check the IDE/SATA settings from the BIOS.
Thanks for using FixYa.

That error signals the fact that the chipset can't communicate with the optical unit. Open the desktop and unplug the data cable, reboot, wait 5 minutes and run a registry cleaner - the one in CCleaner will do, shut down the pc, reconnect the data cable and reboot. If even after that the unit still doesn't work then it's dead - replace it.
