I upgraded my hard drive and cloned my old info onto the Toshiba external hard drive. Now it only recognizes the capacity of the hard drive as 465 gb instead of 2 tb. How do I reset that back to 2 tb?

by up grading do you mean fitting a new hard drive
BY your statement you downloaded all of the data from the old hard drive onto an external 2tb hard drive ( to save everything I imagine )
if that is the case then the computer will only recognize the capacity of the new hard drive which would have been a 500gb unit
there is always a loss of capacity in a hard drive for internal workings and programs so what the computer is reading is most likely the capacity of the new hard drive
if you want to read the capacity of the external hard drive , you will have to click on it separately then go to properties and it will read total capacity and unused capscity

OK look any drive, that's is the format, ie: STA or IDE? and that will fit will work, that 320GB will be OK. Simply install the HDD in the bay, and then use a windows installation disk, or similar to format it, just format it as ONE big partition, that should be fine, IF you find that it will not "See" the HDD, then partition it into smaller partitions. However you should be OK. You need to FIRST test to see if the actual PC is OK, try a HDD before you buy a new one, make sure that it is actually working.

The maximum size hard disk you can install in your Toshiba depends upon the BIOS. The BIOS can support a hard disk up to a certain capacity. Check the specification of your model Toshiba to see the maximum hard drive it can support.
An alternative -
You can use an external USB hard drive and connect it to your Toshiba and not be restricted by the BIOS. You can use USB hard drive 500 Mb to more than 1 Tb.
The other advantage of using an external USB hard drive is you do not need to install Windows, the device drivers and your programs on the new hard drive.

Maximum HDD capacity of an ACER Travelmate 212 TX

Yes you can install a 20 Gb hard drive but I doubt you can buy a new one with that small capacity. The smallest capacity hard drives are approx. 80 to 100 Gb or greater.
You most likely can buy a 2nd hand drive but you don't know its quality, it may have had a hard working life and you don't know how long it will last, but then, if is very cheap that may not be a problem.

I need to replace my hard disk notebook with a bigger capacity hdd

Toshiba is rather secretive with their documentation. It is hard to find. Google TOSHIBA SATELLITE A10 SERVICE MANUAL and check the available offerings.

You now have a 5400 RPM, ATA 100 drive. You should not have any drive size restrictions. Shops are advertising many large drives as compatible.

I suggest that you purchase only a 7200 RPM drive. The faster speed will perk your machine right up.

I have not worked on Toshiba machines but suggest you have all restore disks and passwords at hand.
