You'll have to provide more information. Has your setup been known to work before - If yes, what components have changed. Are certain types of files causing problems or do all audio and video files do this?

Does it happen in all programs? Try Windows Media Player and an alternate (like WinAmp). If it happens in one, you need to check the equalizer in that program. If it happens in both, check the advanced sound settings on your soundcard

Will it harm my laptop to listen to music on it every night all night?

No, it will not harm your laptop, it might harm your ears if you listen to it too loud through headphones. The only possible damage could occur if you listen through the laptops speakers, too loud and constant would adversly wear out the speakers.

The sound has forsaken you because you use it unsubtly.  Take all-caps off and say whether you had sound before, whether installing the audio drivers worked, whether your speakers work when connected to a stereo output, whether your mixer on the computer is configured to do Optical-Out only; go listen to some piano auditions at various levels of ability, down at music academies and universities; play some Van Gelis through some homemade distortion filters; run some mashup software on MIDI files and crank that through midi boxes until you can get something listenable.  Break it down.
