Question about Western Digital My Book Essential 1TB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

Open Question

This is a white 1TB network hard drive. Western Digital. It has had a problem where I can see all of the folders, but no files appear in them. If I reboot (Unplug) then the files show up for about two minutes and I can access and read/write during that time. After that the drive looks available but I can't get to any of the files or folders. Model WD10000D033-001

SOURCE: My Book files and folders disappeared

For me, the problem has now been resolved. What I was really worried about was the 18 Gb of data that I thought I had lost. I was however able to find the containing folder by going into the "Tools" menu in the Explorer window. After selecting "Folder Options" I chose the "View" tab and marked "Show hidden files and folders" and unmarked "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)". Nothing happened at first but when I came back to my drive later I found a hidden folder with all the data I lost that had some funny extension to it. Can't remember what it was but someone I spoke to thought it could be the result of an incomplete file transfer being interrupted. So it seems my problem wasn't more severe than this. However, everytime I try to use Safely Remove Hardware to disconnect my WD 500Gb it says I can't and that I should try later. So there's my new problem: how to disconnect the drive without interrupting a (non-visible) data transfer...

SOURCE: 1tb Western Digital hard drive stopped working suddenly, no light

If the hard drive does not even turn on, then check its power supply. Maybe the power supply went bad; it should be a standard 12V 3.5A power supply.

Even if the power supply is working, chances are good that your data are still there, because the unit not turning on means that the internal enclosure, not the disk electronics, got messed up. It's unlikely that BOTH enclosure electronics AND disk electronics went south together, unless you got a lightning strike at short distance (less than 60 feet, say). You'll need to open the enclosure, extract the drive and connect it to another compatible enclosure (most USB/eSATA enclosures with the same EIDE or SATA connector as your WD will do) in order to override the fritzed enclosure electronics and connect directly to the hard disk. Once you do, your data will be there. If the disk crashed last time it turned on, maybe you'll need to run disk checker and expect to lose a file or two.

On the other hand, if the drive does turn on when powered, and the PC "just" doesn't see it, chances are proportionately bad for your data: you'll need to send the disk to a data recovery service, which can be quite costly.

SOURCE: My western digital 1tb hd stopped working. It just

clicking souind means that the arm that reads the platters is loose and not working any more. The drive is TOAST!. There may be a way you can recover files but it is time consuming and you need another computer. You need to have another computer that you can rapidly plug the hard drive into and boot up. You need to configure your hard drive as a slave drive so the other computer doesn't try to boot off of it. Then you put your drive in a freezer for a hour or so till it's very cold. Take it out, plug in in and boot up and start copying files as fast as you can. The drive MIGHT work for a little while till it warms up, the parts expand and it starts slipping again. Refreeze the drive and do it again. You need to stop using the drive any more than you have to now. The more it sit and clicks the more worn out it will become until it won't have a chance to read. If the freezer doesn't work there are data recovery services that you can get to recover any files you may need. They will repair the drive long enough to get your data. But in a nutshell the drive is bad.

SOURCE: My folder's turned into 1 KB Shortcuts on my 500 GB WD Hard Drive

I believe this is a trojan. I have the same problem. I found by going into Properties-shortcut tab- you have to rename the shortcut to the correct shortcut. You should notice some wierd file name like "keuiku.scr." Simply rename it to the original name and it works for me.

My WD 1TB hard disk drive shows me loaded with 300GB capacity of folders but when they are not seen on my pc

1) Open any folder on your your computer and go to: Tools > Folder options > View tab > check "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". 2) Look at your hard disk again, if you still can't see any files on it, there must be an error of your disk. To solve it, go to: My Computer (or Win+E keyboard shortcut) > Right click on the drive representing the 1TB hard disk > Properties > Tools > Check Now... > Check both boxes to fix errors.

How to transfer movies from dvds to my western digital passport essential

Assuming you have a DVD drive and your HD is already set up, all you have to do is insert the DVD, open "My Computer", open the DVD drive folder and copy the files inside it to your HD folder. If you have trouble playing the video, download the VLC player, it plays almost anything, if you still have trouble, right click on the video folder and click play with VLC player.

My 1.5 tb WD hard drive is showing as a folder on My Computer. also i have a message that the file or folder doorif.scr which refers to this folder cannot be found. Help Please!!

Call Western digital, try online chat. The size of your unit would make the item be under warranty. REcover all data from the drive and then you could reformat it. It depends on whether you use the unit's software or not...
