Question about Panasonic DMR-E85H DVD Recorder

1 Answer

DMR-E85H dvd video recorder. The problem is with starting up of the hard-disk. It takes an extremely long time to boot up, goes into self-check mode then switches off and on, repeatedly returning to self-check mode. Sometimes it may take several hours to become available. Strangely, if the timer record is active, recording still works, sometimes a bit late starting. Is there anything I can do, do you recommend trying formatting of the hard drive? Or is a service essential? If so, a costly one? Will it be worth it?

The problem is caused by a faulty hard disk - it's dying of old age (non-recoverable errors), you should replace it.
No, it shouldn't cost that much, but finding a replacement disk will be difficult and time consuming. But if you're willing to take a gamble before junking it you could install a standard 160GB ATA disk in it, start the unit and upgrade its firmware.
The new firmware can be found here  ftp://ftp.dxcc.com/PANA_DVD.zip

Pan. dmr-e85h turned itself on, self-check

Open case and look for failed capacitors, which are cylindrical and will have a bulging top and a yellow/gold substance leaking out. If this is the problem, search for previous solutions that mention "solder capacitor C1260" for the DMR-E85. I had a similar 'no power' problem with my DMR-E55 and my son and I were able to fix it Sunday. Not hard to do and mine is working again!

Record to disk

I was having the same problem and tried many different types of DVD-R (16x, 8x, even 4x thining speed might be the problem) finally went to the web page and downloaded the updated program. When I put that download into the disk drive the machine read it and the problem went away. Had not been able to use high speed before that either but it worked after the updated program was in it.

Dmr e85 will not start up

Hi Audi,
Try unplugging the hdd & then turn on the dvd recorder & wait for about 5 minutes.
Then unplug the dvd recorder & plug in the hdd & turn back on the dvd recorder to see if that fixes the problem.
