Hi

You can start by taking the cover off the fan compartment of the furnace and carefully listening and observing what is happening while the fan is running. Where is it coming from, what does it sound like, when does it start and stop and so on? A vibrating, rumbling sound could be a fan wheel that's failing and beginning to fall apart. You can check to see if the fan wheel turns easily and inspect the fan blades and hub for any wobbles, cracking or deterioration. Sometimes a fan will come loose from the hub that's clamped on the motor, so check for that kind of possible damage too. Another possibility is that the sheet metal warm air plenum is sometimes insulated on the inside for a ways to reduce noise. That insulation mat can break loose and could cause the kind of noise you describe.
So that's another thing to listen for --- the possibility that the noise is coming from the warm air plenum or ductwork rather than the fan compartment.

If I shut off the blower on my gas furnace do I have to shut down the whole furnace

Turn of the system at the thermostat. If you turn off the blower, assuming you mean at the tstat, there's no need to turn off the pilot. If blower is running and won't stop, even if turned off at tstat, turn off power by any means necessary, and pilot does not need to be turned off. A "standing pilot" is made to stay lit at all times, running or not.

My Rheem Criterion II gas furnace makes metal slapping noise when the blower comes on. It is not the blower or the motor.

Is there noise when the inducer motor comes on? The small motor that comes on first. It sucks the co out of the combustion chamber. It comes on first. Then the burner lights then the blower comes on. And the noise continues while it's running and doesn't stop till the blower stops? Is that correct? But it's not the blower wheel? Could it be out of balance and hitting the blower shroud?

Hello, if the line is freezing there is either a airflow problem or low refrigerant charge. If there is a loud noise most likey the bearings on the motor or the blower wheel is bad and causing a lower amount of air passing over the evaporator coil and thus the freezing of the suction line.

If it makes the noise before the blower comes on it would be the exhaust fan. If it makes the noise when the blower comes on then I would say either the blower motor or bearings to the fan.

Coleman forced air furnace blower

Rmove the two screws holding the blower in place and slide it out. With the power off, rotate the wheel and inspect for debris or an impingement. If everything turns easy, you have a bad motor or start capacitor. If you have rubbing, adjust the wheel. If the motor will not turn, replace it.
