No. The USB connection only allows the transfer of files from the 2488 hard disk. You cannot plug mics or instruments into the Tascam and record them into DAW software.

best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

MY PC wont recognize my Tascam Portastudio device2488, i have Vista

Tascam 2488:
I use Vista and my 2488 MK1.

When you plug in the USB cable from the 2488 into your Vista PC, Vista will always say 'not recognised'.
You do not need any PC drivers for the 2488. On the Tascam 2488, go to 'Menu', then 'Disk', then 'USB Open/Close', then click 'Yes'.
On your PC the 2488 will appear as a new hard drive in the 'Computer' folder, called HDR2488.
You'll see three folders in there: WAVE, SMF and BACKUP.
Use the WAVE folder to import and export WAV files, the SMF folder to import midi files to the 2488, and the BACKUP folder is where you can import and export Backup files to and from the 2488.
Hope this helps!

Just got the Tascam 2488 neo. I'm concerned that due to the size of the room I can't place the unit far enough away from the speakers to ensure I don't damage the unit with electro magnetic fields....

Assuming you are talking about your monitors for your 2488, the first thing I'd do is to consult the manual for proper placement of the monitors relative to the 2488. A quick rule of thumb is to place the monitors at ear level to the left and right of the 2488 so when you sit facing the 2488 yo will have one monitor facing each ear essentially. Again, consult your monitor manual as it will show the best placement and don't worry about electrical fields, etc. I have my monitors to the left and right of the 2488, the 2488 in the center and a 21" flat screen computer display in the center of all that with no problems whatsoever. That is the accepted practice generally speaking. Hope this helps.

Export time on TASCAM 2488 is really long, exporting over 7000MB to FAT, takes 2 hours?

I've never transferred a file that large myself yet, but some song files I have transferred do take upwards of an hour and I agree, that's a long time. To not notice so much, what I've come to do is first, take a well deserved break, or even work on the computer end of things ie: song organizations, really anything I can use that 'down time' for which will help make me more productive and/or organized. as the 2488 needs lots of organizational skills going on in one's head. Or, as I suggested at the outset- just take a break from it all as recording does tend to get long in the tooth after a while. Maybe even read the manual- as boring as THAT is, it has certainly helped me...some..seriously!

16 bit 44.1khz monaural wav format files

I'll assume first that you have wav files on your PC that you'd like to import into your 2488 to use as percussion tracks.

You'll have to convert those files on the PC first into mono wav files. The 2488 can handle 16 or 24 bit so the bitrate shouldn't really be a problem. (It will also automatically truncate a larger bitrate down, but you should really dither the files rather than let them truncate... another topic).

You can use Audacity (free) to convert stereo wav files to mono wav (audacity will also dither for you).

Once your files are converted and saved on the PC, on the 2488 open the USB connection from the DISK menu. (This assumes you already have a usb cable connected between your PC and your 2488.) You will see a device appear on your filelist called HD_2488 or something like that with a drive letter. Copy your mono wav files into the WAV directory on the 2488 USB device.
Then on the 2488 press 'exit' to close the USB and from the WAV IN/OUT menu choose 'USB import'. You should see the WAV files listed. If those files are not mono waves you won't even see them listed. Select the file(s) and press enter to import. You'll be prompted to choose which track to import them to.

That's pretty much it.

Tascam 2488 Portastudio screen.

You could add an HGR monitor interface module to display the 2488 on a PC monitor.

That way you don't need to look at a damaged display and the 2488 (MK1, MKII and NEO) work just like before.

2488 display

There isn't. The closest you can get seems to be this program called T2488 from MixerMuse which allows you to control the 2488 from a PC via a graphic interface.

http://www.mixermuse.com/

It was designed for the PC, but the author has stated that this program may allow it to be ported to the Mac.

http://tascamforums.com/index.php?showtopic=15249

I haven't used the MixerMuse program myself but I've heard some good things about it and it certainly might be worth a look.

Cheers.

2488 to pro tools

There is no way to 'sync' with protools from the 2488. In order to use your 2488 tracks in protools you have to first export your tracks as wav files and move them to your computer via usb and then import them into protools.

To get Protools files into your Tascam 2488 you'll have to export your Protools files into mono wav files first. They must also have a sampling rate of 44.1KHz and can be either 16 or 24 bit. Then load these files into your 2488 via usb and import them into tracks on the 2488.
