Dryer wont start

Is this a gas or electric dryer; helpful to know. The motor is not starting consistently? Focus should be on the motor and starting circuit. Possible bad connection, they need to be clean. Is there a starting relay? If a motor relay fails to disengage the start winding then the motor will overheat. Motor and motor circuit matches the symptoms described.

How to Reverse the Rotation of Single Phase Capacitor-Start Electric Motors

Reversing the rotation of electric motors can be done easily with 3-phase motors. This can be easily achieved by swapping the connection of any two motor leads. But 3-phase motors are usually found and used for industrial purposes. The ones found and used in our homes, from water pumps to electric fans, are single phase capacitor-start type motors. Unlike 3-phase motors, reversing the rotation of single phase electric motors is no easy task. Swapping any two motor leads will not result in the reversal of the motor rotation. Analysis of the motor windings and connections are necessary before any modification can be done to achieve the desired result. Let's take a 3-speed single phase capacitor-start electric motor with electrical diagram shown below as an example. Make sure the motor is disconnected from the power supply before attempting to follow this tip. This tip is intended only for individuals with electrical knowledge, necessary tools, and understand the risks associated with handling electrical equipments and devices.

The first step in the process is determining the start winding which is connected to the line (AC white) and to one side of the start capacitor. To accurately determine the start winding, disconnect all motor leads from the start capacitor and the speed switch for multi-speed motors and then setting your ohmmeter to the lowest scale (R x 1), measure the resistances between the AC white line and each of the motor leads connecting to the start capacitor. The one with the least resistance is the starting winding lead.

Once the start winding lead going to the capacitor is determined, reconnect the capacitor then connect the black AC line to the found start winding lead (marked X). Connect the white AC line to L of speed switch, the motor lead formerly connected to AC white to 3, red to 2, and white to 1 as shown below. Leave the green/yellow ground wire connection as is.

Below are the wiring modifications for 2-speed and single speed single phase capacitor-start electric motors.

Dryer won't start - only beeps

If this unit has a timer it could be faulty. Make sure with the schematic in hand that all the wires are in the right spots on the motor. I did not post the model number so I am not sure what model you have but looks like a Whirlpool part number. If motor was running before you attempted to remove blade, this is a good one. If the motor relay is clicking but not turning that is almost like power is not were it should be. You can contact me here or reply to FIXYA with a response. Click here to see posts on dryers. I wish I could be more help. The first place I would start is with a schematic.

Motor humms but wont engage

The start capacitor or start winding has gone bad. Or bearings are dry.
Don't run motor if it does not rotate full speed or motor will overheat and go bad.
Replace or repair motor.

Each motor has 2 winding circuits.
Start winding and run winding.
Both windings receive power same time.
Start winding has capacitor that releases sudden burst of electricity that starts motor rotation. Kind of like low speed on transmission.
Run winding then brings motor up to speed.

Amana front load washer hums only

A centrifugal switch to allow the motor to start up on the start winding and once started it opens to take it out of the start winding. The motor has to have voltage applied to the start winding and the run winding at the same time in order for the motor to start. The capacitor is part of the start circuit. When the motor goes to start, the voltage must be applied to the start winding in order for the motor to start or it will just hum. The moment the motor reaches a certain RPM the centrifugal switch opens up to remove the start voltage to the motor and it will remain running on the run winding. The motor will not start up on run voltage alone. It needs both, the start voltage and run voltage.

I think the problem is that the motor is not getting the start voltage supplied to the motor or the start winding has opened up in the motor.

Dryer starts when rotating sping loaded start switch and after releasing it dry stops.

it souds as if the run winding on the motor is bad, all dryer motors have a run&start winding on the motor, the start winding comes on at the beginning to give teh motor a extra little ummph to start the motor then the start winding will cut out. What your experiencing is the start winding working but the run winding not., the motor can not be repaired but only replaced as a complete assambly

Motor hums but want start

start windings iin the motor may be burned out. Try turning the drum with your hand and see if it will start up. Some dryer motors have a start capacitor which if it goes out the motor will not start. The start capacitor i usually mounted on the motor and looks like a big battery. Do not inspect without unplugging the dryer.

Vehicle not starting

this may be because of following reasons
1.battery power is low recharge it and try starting.
2.the supply going to the starting motor is chopped off so no power is going to the motor for starting.
3.the terminal to which these motors are connected may be damaged.(motor terminal)
4.the junction box/relay to which the motor is connected may be damaged.
5.the fuse may be blown out for the motor
6.the starting motor may be damaged so that starting motor doesnt turn

these may be the reasons for not starting.

How do you know if the motor is going bad? Sometimes when I start it the motor will hum for a few seconds and them will start real slow. other times it wont start at all. can I isolate the motor to see if...

Three possibilities: the drum bearings may be worn causing hard turning, the motor bearings may be about worn out allowing the rotor to contact the stator inside the motor, and last, but maybe the most likely, the start capacitor, which is mounted near the motor, may be going bad causing weak starts at first, then no-start/loud humming finally. Take the belt off of the motor pulley and start the dryer--the motor should almost instantly be running full speed. You can test the motor bearings (when motor is OFF) by trying to push/pull the shaft in various directions sideways. Any obvious slop is a sign of worn bearings. Try turning the drum by hand to see if it turns fairly freely. Hope this helps!
