Webcam not recording video

Some webcams and programs require additional software, although that should be installed with the webcam if things are right. But is does not harm to check if your Java, Flash and Quicktime software are installed and up to date. But certainly check your DirectX software, since all video applications, including webcams, use DirectX for video processing. Try downloading the latest DirectX version and install it (Windows XP: DirectX 9.0c - Windows Vista: DirectX 10). http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Which-version-of-DirectX-is-on-your-computer The Dell Inspiron line of laptop computers allows consumers to customize their system in a number of ways, from hardware specifications to color. The laptop also comes with an integrated webcam that can be used as a camera and for video Web chats. You can use the camera from the Dell Webcam Manager application, which controls all the functions of the camera.

Click the "Start" button on your computer, highlight "All Programs," and select "Dell Webcam Manager" from the list of available applications. Click on the "Webcam Center" icon. From the tab at the top of screen, select the action you want the camera to perform. You can use the camera to record videos, snap photos, detect motion, monitor remotely, and take time-lapse video. Press the "Record" button to start recording video or take a snapshot.

Hi there,
You might want to give Ecamm's iUSBCam software a try. It allows many normally unsupported USB webcams to work with the Mac. You can download a free trial of it here: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/index.html
It looks like most Logitech webcams are supported. You can view a list of known working webcams here: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iusbcam/configs.html#known_configs.
Unfortunately, the iUSBCam software isn't compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). However, if you are using an older version of OS X, you should give the program a try.
Let me know if you have any other questions!
Sincerely, Ben

Overiding the webcam built-in to a Dell 1720 laptop

Normal 0 Right click on My Computer and click on PROPERTIES.
Then click on DEVICE MANAGER, and then click on Imaging Devices.
Next click on the + and then on the camera, right click and then click on DISABLE.
Then click on the Red X in the upper LEFT corner.
Then get out of that and install your new camera.

Make sure to disconnecting the Camera from the USB port and reinstall the software program. When the program asks you to connect the camera to the USB port, do so and it should work.
Hope this helps. Bud

If you have it still installed on your old computer and still have that computer you may be able to tell what brand and model it is from there. If it's a USB webcam you might need to plug it into the old computer for this.

In the Mac OS your webcam would probably show up on your computer's desktop as it's own icon and tell you what brand it is and possibly model as well.

If you're working in Windows, you should be able to view it from your device manager. Let me know if you're working on a Mac or other OS and need instructions on how to look at the webcam's properties in there. There also may be associated software installed on your old computer that says the brand name and/or model to give you clues.

Often in Windows webcams have software that runs automatically when the computer's on and it's plugged in (sometimes even when it's not plugged in) that also makes a little icon (picture) in the bottom right of a Windows screen, by the time. Hovering over the icons that look like your webcam should allow you to pick the correct one to open and identify what webcam you have.

If you don't still have it installed or don't have access to your old computer, you may be able to recognize it on common webcam sites. Logitech makes popular webcams & their site has pics of their different models so you can get the correct download here: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/support_downloads/downloads/webcams/&cl=us,en

All this is assuming that you tried plugging it in already. If you haven't tried it, you might want to as OS's often come pre-loaded with various device drivers.

Hope that helps! :)

The Logitech QuickCam Messenger does not officially support Mac, but this (http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net) website appears to have drivers with will allow the webcam to work correctly on your Mac. Or you can just download the drivers directly with this link: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webcam-osx/macam.0.9.1.dmg?download
