Question about Briggs & Stratton Lawn-Boy Insight Series 21-Inch 190cc 650 Series Gas Powered Engine Variable Speed Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

1 Answer

My daughter added oil then proceeded to mow the lawn. mower started smoking then quit. When I got home from work I was able to start the engine one time and it smoked a lot. I turned it off and have not been able to start it. Oil leaked around the engine and on the bottom of the mower. I don't want to get into a lot of expense, money is tight. How can i fix it.

My mower is doing the same thing, except mine will continually start with no issues other than the smoking. I have changed the oil and the spark plug with no solution.

With the engine cold, check the oil level. Oil level is quite important especially in a smaller engine. Try to clean all excess oil off engine and body. Then, if you can get it running....check for any leaks. If it is still smoking, it has other issues besides being too full of oil. The oil breather will be full of oil. The oil filter may be saturated with oil. Check those 2 things especially as they allow motor oil to be drawn into the carburetor and cause excessive smoking. Pull out and clean the spark plug. Post back if needed.

Why when I couldn't start my toro 6.5 gts lawn mower with tecumsuh engine,I sprayed carb cleaner into carb and it started but smoked and knocked. what caused this problem?

bob if you spray carb cleaner in and it started that is a sign of not getting fuel. but if it is smoking and knocking you have a bad outlook for that engine. did you hit anything with the blades while mowing that caused it to stop suddenly? did you tip it on its side as the oil may have run in the carburetor. that can cause the smoking. does it have to much oil in it?

22hp.zero turn sometimes smokes then stops.

The smoke could be caused by blowby around the piston rings. Pour a small amount of transmission fluid in the spark plug hole and turn the engine over several times. Check the plug for fouling. Also check the coil wire for spark.

I have had my Poulan Lawn Mower for 4 years. The model number is 961320020. As I was mowing the lawn today, I thought that it might be running a bit sluggish and it dawned on me that I had not ever added...

Four years without adding or changing the oil?!
I think that was the problem right there.

Mowers need oil changes to protect the cylinder walls and valve guides every 25 hours of operation. Thats usually about one season if your yard is under an 1/3 of an acre.

Your mower ran on almost no oil for the last two years. The normal lawn mower only holds 20 ounces of oil. You topped off with 16 ounces! The four ounces still in the motor were probably so full of dirt and metal particles that it was grease! Which is no help to an engine that gets its lubrication by splash oiling.

Your mower should be oiled with 30 weight non detergent oil. Multi Vis oils are for engines with tighter machined tolerances. Your oil choice is going to go right past the piston rings and valve guides creating gobs of smoke! Go get some 30W ND oil at your parts store and put it in....but run the mower first so you can clean out all the gunk in the oil sump. Run it long enough for the oil to flow easily.

Once you put in the right oil you can run it and try to clear out the remaining multi vis oil.

If it keeps smoking...I would say you have permanent damage to the cylinder wall or valve guides.

Good luck and be careful!

I have a Troy Bilt mower w/ a Honda engine GCV160. OK, so I turned it on it's side after the last mow and the next time I tried to start it, it smoked and quit. Now the engine will not even turn over when...

Pull the spark plug and see if there is oil in the cylinder. When you turn a 4 cycle engine over or on it's side, the oil can leak into the cylinder. There may be so much oil in there that the piston won't move. When you have the plug out, clean it before you re-install. Good luck...Lee

White smoke

White smoke is most likely cause there is to much in the engine.. Only takes about half quart.. Clean with degreaser and garden hose on the outside..

Oil causing a problem?

Sound as if you have too much oil in the machine. Anytime you see white or lite gray smoke it is a sign of too much oil. Before you go through the routine of cleaning the oil out of every nook and cranny, try unscrewing the spark plug and clean it with a soft rag. It would have oil on it preventing the machine from starting. If this does work and there isn't a lot of oil in the gas tank now, just continue running the engine until the smoke clears. It won't hurt anything. But if cleaning the plug doesn't help you will have to empty all gas and oil from the gas tank, refill with new gas, squirt a little gum out carb cleaner in your carb to remove any oil there (this can be done when you try to restart the engine). Remember, when you are mowing grass if you are mowing on a hill) of any knd, make sure to turn the mower so the gas tank is on a higher level than the oil.
