Question about HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One - InkJet Printer
There is a optocoupler that detect the presence of paper by IR sensor. So if there is dirt on it , it ispossible to have this message on to the display.
remove off paper and do a good cleaning, the sensor is fixed just near the outlet of the paper to indicate when the last bit crosses over. Clean the tiny sensor holes and check.
If not it is possible that the sensor is faulty and must be replaced. You can open board to check the signal to see if the detection is showing a reading, but do this only if you are familiar to open up the mother board.

The feeder paddle is worn. It has rubber flaps to move (advance) the paper. Replacements maybe still around through hp.com
