Question about GE GSS25XSRSS 36" 25.4 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator w/ Tall LightTouch Dispenser, FrostGuard T...

2 Answers

I have a GE GSS25XSRDSS, and its about 5 years old and the fan at the back of the freezer has stopped working, causing the items to defrost. Last time I had a relative of mine check it out, and he said that the fan had frozen up and that I should unplug the fridge and wait for it to defrost. I did that and it worked for a while, but now I have the same problem. I called in a repairman to check it out, and he said I need to get the control panel changed... Any solutions or feedback on how I can do this myself and the cost of the control panel?

The control board costs about $150.00 . You can easily replace this board , due to all the plugs will only plug into the receptical designed for them . Maybe 6 plugins . Pt # WR55X10942 . The control board sends 6-9 volts DC current to the motor . Easily replaceable .

All you need is a new evaporator fan, remove freezer panel take a couple of screws out unplug fan, plug new fan in. That's it. You can order a fan from any appliance store just bring the model# and tell them you need the evaporator fan. Rate me if I helped!

Do you see any ice buildup on the back wall of the freezer or behind it?

My GE fridge is not cold. Over the last maybe 5 days I noticed the freezer was good but the fridge side was getting warmer, now today the fridge side is warm and freezer side is just cold. Everything on...

Without your model number this is quite generic but should help you troubleshoot.

- Feel the face of the cabinet where the doors close. It should be warm but not HOT to the touch. If you note that the cabinet is hot in the door gasket area open the back of the unit and clean out the condenser coils. Make sure the condenser fan is running. The fan should be running any time the compressor is running.
- Look in the very back of the freezer compartment for signs of frost or ice build up. If you note this condition it is a result of the automatic defrost cycle / componenets not working. The components of the defrost cycle are the defrost control, (main board on some GE units), the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat or thermistor depending upon model. One of these components or wiring has failed.
- Can you hear the compressor running?
NO: The possible causes are:
The PTC / KilXon Thermal overload mounted on the side of the compressor.
The Run capacitor
The compressor
Main control board
Defrost cycle not complete (caused by a bad thermostat or thermistor) What will happen is the unit would go into defrost and never restart. Additionally the defrost heater can remain on.
Temperature control malfunction

The fan in the freezer compartment is supposed to be on any time the compressor is running.
If the compressor is running and the evaporator fan is not running you need to find out why. It can be stopped from ice build up locking the fan blades in place, a bad motor or a wiring problem to the fan.

Lastly... if all the coils are clear, the fans and compressor are running.. the unit can be low on coolant. Low coolant problems are always a result of a tubing. fitting or compressor leak. Most compressor leaks are found right at the PTC / Overload connection area. A leak is easily identified by an oil residue surround the area of a leak. I use a kleenex or paper towel to GRASP but not wipe suspected areas and look for oil on the tissues. If you find oil... you found your leak.

The GE side by side is roughly 10 years old and when the turbo cool bin is on it makes a rattle noise every 5 mins. like a toy gun sound. I turn it off and it stops. It only happens when the bottom bin...

It's freezer fan hitting with your bin drawer when it's over ice formed behind the freezer. It's due to malfunction of defrosting. Keep 5 degree thermostat setting. And check thermostat by turning counter clock wise. If shuts off the fridge, it's working. If not replace thermostat. Check defrost timer set in proper setting. Once defrost cycle is good, no banging sound will be there. Thanks.

My 5 year old GE GSH22JSRSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator recently stopped cooling. I noticed a build up of frost on the freezer, so unplugged the fridge and let the ice melt away. After this,...

The problem you describe is that your defrost circuit has failed. The fridge should stop the compressor periodically and turn on the defrost heater to melt the frost buildup. Since the frost in building up on your coils, the fan can't blow the cold air into the fridge compartment. It defrost is controlled by a module that turns on the heater. Most of these failures have to do with the defrost heating element burning out. It can be replaced by someone who has some mechanical ability.

The coil and heater is located in the back of the freezer compartment behind the panel in the back. You can obtain parts from appliance repair outlet or online like appliancepartspros.com or repairclinic.com.

Freezer is warm at top and cold on the bottom.

Sounds as tho your evap fan is not running. Open door to freezer and should hear a fan running smoothly. If not most of the time the problems is with the main control board on back of refrigerator.

Freezer coils frost up within minutes after being turned back on

Your evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Compressor & Evap. Fan both work for 12 hours then evap stops

I believe that because defrost is done by the mother control board this is why this is happening the part of the board that controls defrost is malfunctioning and the only way to resolve the problem is to replace the mother board part number WR55X10656 You can find the replacement board at these places below. GE side by side refrigerator has totally stopped working.

Look inside the unit and make sure the thermostat hasn't been accidentally bumped or turned.

You could also have a stuck or malfunctioning defrost timer. This device, usually located at the bottom of the unit, sometimes accessible from the front, interrupts the compressor operation and initiates a defrost cycle in the freezer section (using electric heating elements). It is basically a timer. Sometimes they stick or stop working. If you can reach it, you may be able to rotate the dial clockwise with a screwdriver and get the refrigerator working for the time being. However, you should replace it if this is the cause.

GE GSS 25QF Side by side Refrigerator

Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
