Go to the Tools > Settings > Navigation > and press the button under Avoidances. Use the arrow down and place a check mark in the box beside Unpaved Roads and then press OK. Also, go to the Tools > Settings > Navigation > and setting the Route Preference to Faster Time will usually route using freeways. This is not always the case, as some secondary roads are paved and the unit will route to them if it calculates that this will be a faster route. It is usually a good idea to familiarize yourself with an unknown route. This can be done after creating the route and touching the map screen. Zoom out to view sections of the route. Via points can then be added to modify the route as necessary.
You can set the unit to avoid highways. It sounds as though this setting has been turned on. Press the wrench key at the bottom of the main screen. The press "Navigation." If "Avoidances" says "Enabled", press it. If there is a checkmark next to "Highways", press and remove it. Then press "OK". This should correct the problem.
Question: Why does my nuvi route me off highways and through small side roads?
Answer: If your nuvi routes you off of the highway and puts you on small side streets, usually there is a simple navigational settings change that should resolve the issue for you.
From the 'Where to?'/'View Map' screen:
Touch the 'Wrench' icon. Touch 'Navigation' icon.¹
On this menu there will be a 'Route Preference' and 'Avoidances' menu option.
If you have the 'Route Preference' set to 'Shorter Distance', this may sometimes route you off of a highway to put you on a more direct route. Try setting the 'Route Preference' to 'Faster Time' and see if that makes a difference in how the unit routes you.
Another setting that can be adjusted is the 'Avoidances' option, touch on 'Enabled' next to 'Avoidances' A list of avoidances will appear, on that list if 'Highways' is checked then the unit thinks that you do not want to travel on highways and therefore routes you off of them. Simply uncheck the box next to 'Highways' and that should resolve the issue.

I had "highways" listed, so I'm hoping this fixes my problem tomorrow.
These things are miles from perfect. However, if you knew of the freeway route, you should have taken it. Remember, a PND is only useful when you don't know where you are and can often be confusing if you're using it to direct you to place that you know.
