Replacing the flyback is the most dangerous part to replace on CRT sets, because of the high voltage lead that plugs into the tube needs to be unplugged. the tube will hold 20,000v+ at any given time.

If you are OK with this then what you need first is a Flat head screwdriver and a alligator clip. clip one side of the clip to the ground that goes around the tube (silver wire wrapped around tube) then the other end on the metal part of the screwdriver. Now slide the screw driver under the rubber cap on the top of the tube and lift so you can the the lead under the rubber, the touch it with the screwdriver to discharge the tube, now unplug it by wiggling it from left to right as your pulling. Now only 2 more wires. the other wires go to the crt board, one may be soldered in, you just need to unsolder it. the other wire will be inside the white cap on the crt board. there well be a lever thing that goes up or down right by the wire, move it and it will release the wire. Plug all wires back in from new flyback

Now you must unsolder the old flyback and solder the new one in. after that is done turn the set on. dont be worried if no picture, Sonys need to be adjusted sometimes. try turning the knob on the flyback (the one on the bottom). try to get it right in the middle, and set should come on, then adjust for brightness and focus (top knob)

Sony Trinitron Picture Tube replacement

I think that you will find the picture tube to be more expensive than a replacement TV, if it is still available (unlikely). That being said, it is also unlikely that the tube itself is the problem, The more common problem is the horizontal output transistor or the flyback transformer. Either part should still be available for a reasonable cost. Check with a local servicer for the part numbers and costs. These are common parts.

The 2 blinks are an indication of over-current. This is usually because of a shorted component. The most common is the horizontal output transistor. This will be a 3-legged part attached to a heat sink close to the flyback transformer (part with red wire coming out the top). This transistor will be marked C4856 or something similar. Update this with the exact marking and I'll provide you with the full part number and approximate cost.

It more like the tuning capacitor(s) that is connected to the HOT that is defective or a cristalized/dry solder joint nearby the flyback transformer.

When the horizontal output (2SC4927) is shorted it means one of 2 things is wrong - the horizontal drive transformer has cracked solder joints or the flyback transformer is shorted inside. If the solder joints on the horizontal drive transformer (the small grey transformer connected to the base of the horizontal output transistor) are cracked then the set will play for a little while and then the parts you just replaced will again be destroyed. ALWAYS resolder the driver transformer when replacing the parts you mentioned! When I replace the parts you mention and I do not see any obvious cracks on the driver transformer then I unsolder the B+ pin of the flyback (labeled 135, for 135 volts) and put a 60 to 100 watt lightbulb (drop-light) in series with the flyback. This means that the 135 volts B+ goes through the lightbulb and then into the flyback, so the lightbulb acts as a current limiter to protect the horizontal output. When you turn the set on the bulb should glow no more than about half bright and you should hear the high voltage come up, but you should not see a picture. If you turn the set on and the bulb glows as bright as if it was plugged into the wall then you can bet that flyback is shorted and must be replaced.
