Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Map problem I have a 660 and it only shows roads on the left except for an occasional one on the right and it's not a main road it may be a dead end just past the main road. I had a nuvi 360 that did the same thing after contacting Garmin several times I got rid of it and bought the 660. I also have a C330 and it shows roads both righ and left witch I have told tech support at Garmin and I never get and answer why I can't get it on the 660. I have sent them photos of both the c330 and the 660 mounted on the windshield and the c330 is showing the roads on the rihgt and left while the 660 is not. What can I do to correct thsi problem?e-mail me at jmac1945@yahoo.com PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Check the zoom level, you may bee zoomed out too far to see the streets. The 660 is an old model, but if I remember correctly the settings are the same. Go into your settings, then map, then change your details (usually 5 different settings ranging from least to normal to greatest.)

No roads near starting point

I assume that there should be roads there. It may be that the map is unselected.
  1. Press TOOLS
  2. Press SETTINGS
  3. Press MAPS
  4. At the bottom of the screen press MAP INFO
You should see the name of the maps installed on your satnav. There should be a tick beside the maps if it's selected. If there's not press the map name to select it. This should solve your problem.
If this does not solve the problem the map may be locked. To get information on how to unlock it go to http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing
There may be more information there than you need but it has everything you could need about getting maps working on a garmin nuvi satnav

How do I set the GPS so it shows me the best route on main roads and not all the side, gravel and dirt roads

Click Tools.....Settings.....Navigation...

I like Faster Time.... you can change it to Shorter Distance or Off Road
depending on your gps

On Avoidances... I have it Enabled

click Avoidances.... I avoid U-Turns.....Traffic...Carpool Lanes...Unpaved Roads

click OK after your choices..

Good idea when you plan a route is to check it by arrowing down your map to make sure its the route you want to travel, if not go back to main page and click detour X to change route then you can save it if you like

Hi, We live down a private road. For the past 2

You can contact garmin and ask for a map correction but unfortunatly until they update it AND the people have that updated map on their GPS
it will continue. best bet but a dead end sign at the front of the drive way.

Nuvi 285WT GPS Receiver: Road I'm on doesn't show in general map mode ... o...

Try resetting the unit. If your address or the road your driving on isn't show - try resetting the unit and then on the lower right corner click the space there. Some roads I have noticed do show and some sadly do not.

Tom Tom XL shows me 200-300 yards from my actual

1- Signal strenght loss is a common problem, has to do with how often they refresh, whats on your dash and how good the line of sight is to the gps sattelites. Ironically the window mount that they give you can in some cases place the gps unit too far back from the window to get good clear reception.
2- You are out in the field because of the maps that you are using. Maps while mostly accurate are not exact and road changes that are made to sections of road may take years to show up in the map or might never show up. There are only two or three actual companies that do the gps survey work for the roads, and gps manufacturers like Tom Tom buy user rights to use these maps, so if a particular section of road has changed or been moved and nobody has been out to recalcute the changes then your gps will be off the mark.
Hope this information helps you out.

It only shows main roads

If you have selected the MAP all of Eu or USA you will only get the main arterial roads. Select the map that is appropriate for the location you live in.

Have you updated the software since you purchased the unit? If not, go to Garmin's site, download WebUpdater and check to see if there is an update to the unit's software. If so, download this and see if it helps. If not, try downloading the same version of the software again. This might help also.
