Hi,
The compressor is locked up ...
As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then…

Check out this tip that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

How to tell if the compressor on your ac unit is running

If you have a split unit, it is fairly simple, just feel the small refrigerant line coming out of the unit. The temperature should be warmer than the surrounding air. If is not running the temperature will be the same as the surrounding air. If you have a package unit, take off the access cover to where the compressor is located. Find the compressor discharge piping to the the condensing coil. It is the smaller of the two major pipes on the side of the compressor. Be careful the temperature of line coming out of a properly operating compressor will be hot enough to cause second degree burns. If the line is very warm to very hot the compressor is running. If you have a set of gauges, attach the RED hose to the high pressure service connection and the other low pressure hose BLUE to the bigger pipe low pressure connection. Make sure the gauges are isolated by shutting the valves. The pressure difference between high and low pressure is normally at least 150 psig diference.

I have a kitchaide side by siide refrigerator 7 yrs old. i have been noticing burning smell coming from refrigerator (not inside) when i walk by refrigrerator it smells like burnt wires burning. i dont...

Hello,
Just went through the same thing only with a water leak also. The root of the issue was a computer board which shut down a cooling fan which is supposed to cool the compressor. A repair technician stated the warning signs are a constantly running unit and the center divider between the freezer and refrigerator is hot to the touch. As far as the smell and water leak. The waterline was laying against the compressor which registered at 174 degrees which melted the line and caused the leak. I guess your compressor could just be very hot also.
This line was after the valve so the only time it leaked was when the ice maker refills or one dispenses water. Access is easy pull unit out and remove lower panel on rear of unit. fan , compressor and line all visible At first he thought it was just a cooling fan but after further testing found it was a control board. The big problem is this causes a small unnoticeable water leak which over time does a great job at damaging wood floors, etc. Short term fix while waiting for parts is to shut off water and place a small fan pointed at compressor, this did reduce temp of divider and now it doesn't run 24/7.
Good Luck

The unit will not cool below 78 degrees. How do I check the freon level?

Without refrigeration gauges, you can't check your freon level. You have to check the pressure of the freon, not the level. If you are careful and have a basic knowledge of electricity and moving parts, you can get an idea if you are out of freon. If you remove the lower slotted cover from the refrigerator you will see the condensor coils. This is a radiator that has aluminum fins on the front and will have a fan running behind it. If the compressor is running this condenser coil should be hot to the touch at the top part of the aluminum fins. If the fins are covered with dust and dirt it can cause your cooler to malfunction. Also if the fan is not running the compressor will overheat and quit. If you pull the cooler away from the wall, you can see the compressor in the bottom of the cooler. There are two copper lines leading to the compressor. The small line goes to the condensor coils (the radiator) and should be hot enough to burn your finger if you have enough freon. Also the larger of the two copper lines brings the freon back to the compressor from inside the cooler. It should be cold to the touch if you have proper freon pressure. If both of those two lines feel about the same temperature, either the compressor is not running or you have no freon. BE CAREFUL! There are electrical lines and moving fan blades near the compressor, and some of the tubing gets really hot.

My air condition is not blowing cold air

best diagnostic method is dual head gauges. balanced pressure between low and high side in the off position is aroung 90 lbs. running low pressure is 20-40 lbs and high pressure 160-200, is the compressior not coming on? does it stay on, or click on and off. either might mean the freon level is low. try unplugging the low pressure switch on the low side supply line and shorting the pigtail wires together with a paper clip. does the compressor stay on now? if so and the air is warm or cool, freon is low. if the air is cold that switch is bad. if compressor still won't come on the list of possibilities grows longer: compressor, comp fan clutch, AC relay, restriction at several places... repair shop time...

Why i have high presure in the low presure side

Two common reasons for this.

1) valves weak/broken and pressure is leaking in from the high side of the system.

2) AC compressor is not running. Make sure the compressor is actually running. It has a low rumbling noise to it - and often you'll need to actually 'feel' the compressor for the vibration (of running). Or feel of the big copper line (it should be cool-cold) - or - feel the smaller of the two lines (warm to hot).

good luck

2006 Acura TL Air Conditioning Problems

you really need a manifold guage set. this will let you see the pressure levels for the high and low side. you could have overcharged the system which will cause many problems. you may have a problem with a pressure switch. some cars have a shut off for low pressure and high pressure. if you overcharged it the pressure will be too high and could explain some of this. i've not seen the compressor respond to the fan switch before. is the compressor locking up and you smell the serpentine belts burning on the ac pulley? the condensation coming out under the car will change depending on if the compressor is running and how hot it is outside. not really an indication of anything else. get back with me i work on ac systems and would like to help. good luck

Have a reverse cycle split system LG aircon blowing warm air on cool or heat, have cleaned filters and turned power off for to reset ,both inside and compressor fan working

Hi, dealing with these ductless split systems on a daily basis, I can say you have checked some of the things I would have wanted you to check, which is good on you're part.Blowing Room Temp. air in both heating and cooling indicate that the compressor is not running even though the outdoor condenser fan is on.There are several things that could cause this. You have a compressor run capacitor that starts the compressor, but I am thinking on you're unit, it has a dual capacitor that runs the compressor and fan together. Fan is on, so I will rule this out. These units are notorious for leaking freon as the Liquid line and suction lines are not brazed, they are put together with connectors that tend to leak over time. If it is low enough on Refrigerant gas, the compressor will shut off and stay off on low pressure. This unit has a low pressure switch that has normally closed contacts, that opens and stops the compressor from any damage which in turn, you will have no cooling or heating.Do this for me, turn the unit on in cooling, lower T-stat way down so outdoor unit comes on. Go to the out door unit and where the elect. wiring and lines go into unit you will see to copper lines. The largest of the 2 lines is the low or suction line.Wrap you're hand around it and it should be nice and cold. If it is warm, just touch the smaller line, it should be rather warmer, almost hot.If both lines are of normal temp. you are either out of freon or the compressor isn't running. You can remove panel to get to it and put your hand on it to see if it is on. If the lines were of normal temp. and the compressor is not on, more than likely you have lost the charge.Look it over, the wiring to see if you see anything burned or connections burned off and so on. You can check the 3 wires going into the compressor by turning off the power at breaker and removing the cap covering wires just to make sure these wires are intact. sometimes one will get hot from power and burn off. If you see this problem, it would be something you could fix.If all looks good, go back to the copper lines and being this is a Heat-Pump, you should have 3 fittings where we install our gauges to check and fill systems with freon. Look for one that is on the unit itself and remove the plastic cap.Don't be alarmed if you do as nothing will come out.If you look inside the valve, and you see a Schrader core, you can depress it with a nail or something small, just enough to see if it has a lot of pressure in it.If very little or none, the system is out of freon. You will have to call a tech out to find leak and evacuate and re-charge system.I wanted to give you many things to check so you and I would know what the problem is, a process of elimination. If you have a lot of pressure, then more then likely you have a faulty compressor. If you feel that you would rather not check the electrical or depress the Schrader, I fully understand. You can at least check the temp. of the lines and listen to see if the compressor is running, and if it is with warm lines it is still low on freon. Please keep me informed, and again the long explanation was for you to understand more about you're system operation. Sincerely, and best of luck,

Compressor stops then leaks down to low setting

That little copper line is an unloading line, to bleed compressed air out of the compressor head so that the motor can more easily start the compressor. Pressor switch should be threadded into top of air tank, and the unloading valve is built into the side of the switch. When the tank reaches the high pressure setting the switch disconnects power to the motor and opens the unloading valve at the same time. The unloading valve should be connected to the compressor discharge line through a check valve with an unloading valve port upstream of the check valve. These valves are usually threaded into the top of the air tank as well. Sounds to me like your valve was leaking and someone bypassed it.

check power on the 24 volt coil of the contact pushing in the contactor will not make youre blower in the house run only start the compressor and condensing fan on the outside unit. if u do not have 24 volts on the coil of the contactor that could mean a few things high or low pressure switch is open. which this sounds like the problem because you stated the unit starts but both (copper) pipes stay warm this may be cause by no freon in the system. see normally if you push that contactor in when the indoor fan not running u will get really cold big pipe thats called the suction line. check if you have voltage on the coil when unit is calling for cooling if not look at the schematic and ohm the pressure switces if there are any

The high side psi. should be at least around 100# ps more than the low side psi. The low side psi sounds ok, but the high side tells you the problem is the outside condenser is plugging up! Go to an ac supply house, and buy a gallon of coil cleanner and dilute it and fully clean the outside condenser coils ,after it's cleaned ,check the charge now!
