Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio

1 Answer

I recently bought a cobra 29 ltd classic the came with two antennas. 1 3 foot antenna not sure what brand, and an 8 foot fiberglass antenna once again unsure of the brand. i tried to tune my antenna but will try again in an empty area. i can pickup transmissions but only when i am extremly close to the other radio. example: i was driving down to New Mexico from denver co on 25 and i would pick the transmission up when they were 100ft passing me in the other lane. i tried to transmit but did not get any replies. i have heard that there is something that can happen with 1 half of the radio dieing out. coould this have happened? any help is apreaciated and i will state right now that i am a college student so buying a firestick antenna and going to a repair shop to fix it is a hard task due to cash shortage. Many Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt, my name is John. Try making sure your antenna is grounded, and that it is away from anything blocking the transmit (steel rod) element. A good magnet mount antenna is a good one. Turn on the radio, and turn the squelch all the way to the left, and turn the RF gain all the way open, and turn the mic gain all the way up. Have someone check your SWR on the antenna, like Radio Shack, it,s a free check. That should about do it...Let me know how it goes....Could be internal....cheers....John

I see two possible problems. First, with a magnetic antenna it is difficult to get the proper ground for the antenna. Make sure the magnetic base is clean as well as where you place it. Second, try running your power lead DIRECTLY to the battery and not using the cigarette lighter. Hope it helps.

I disconnected and reconnected the cobra 29 nw ltd classic and now my voice is heard very low and slow it was working fine just before disconnection. can you help

How did you disconnect it?? Antenna wire?? Power supply?? Microphone?? May be that you have a short in your coax in back of radio. Try taking it loose and screw it back in. Try new coax. Turn up Mic gain knob or change microphone. Make sure power wires are connected RED to RED(+) and Black to Black(-). Try grounding radio to metal ; if inside house ground to metal water pipes, filing cabinet, breaker box or meter box or 8 foot rod into earth. Measure SWR it should read 1.1 to 1.5. Measure power supply with Voltmeter it should be 12 to 15 volts. Check antenna plug in back of radio is my guess or microphone itself.

Calibration problem

Changing the length of the mast more then likely made your antenna to short, and therefore impossible to tune.

Cobra 29 ltd classic side mic

First off I dont believe anyone to peek and tune but anyways. Make sure your mike is for the radio wiring. Next the guy that rigged it up might have gave you all the channels do all your knobs work??? usually you can tall as you get someone to talk with you a few blocks away and start, start turning and flipping switches till you can hear him most likely the guy that did the work on it messed it up. for a filter use a farite choke from radioshack on the mike wire.

Cobra 29 ltd classic cb not transmitting

Check the ground. Make sure its grounded well on bare metal. To see if the ground is bad, or not making good connection, disconnect the antenna and turn it on. if it does not power up, that means your ground is bad, and it was grounding only through the antenna.

Make sure not to key up with out the antenna connected.

Cobra 29 LTD Classic not transmitting or receiving

As I understand from a tech friend of mine, most truck beds are not grounded well enough. Perhaps you could borrow/purchase a magnet mount antenna and locate it on the roof, for testing. Then you would have it narrowed down to the location.
