Question about IBM ThinkPad G41 Notebook

3 Answers

I formated My computer with Windows XP, and then manually installed most of the drivers found on the lenovos site for my Think-pad G41 model 2886-92U. unfortunately I don't have any sounds. my speakers are not working. When I open 'Sounds and Audio Devices' in control panel everything is grey and I cannot choose anything. I cannot open the volume controls. when I go to device manager - Sound, video and game controllers - double click on SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio properties - I click on the tab 'Properties' and then open Audio Devices or Mixer Devices it says 'Driver is enabled but not functioning properly'. I have downloaded the audio drive(soundmax) and the run the setup to install it. when I open Device manager there are NO question marks indicating Driver missing. I've been trying to solve this issue for days now but still unsuccessful. Someone told me to check if the sound is enabled in BIOS and I went into the BIOS and then CONFIG but I don't see the option SOUND in the list. is that normal? (the reason I'm asking if it's normal is because I had never been into BIOS before.) God knows how much I want this problem to be resolved. I would appreciate your help very much.

    Dear Geekman,

As far as I can see Lenovo website offers only one set of drivers for G41 regardless of the model but anyway I had been to the link you provided before and I have downloaded all related drivers and ran the setup.

I would like to pay your attention to the following points:

    1) please have a look into this lenovo forum link which you can find detailed messages of my problem. I would like you to specially have a look at the detailed audio device description PC doctor gives to see if you can find any abnormalities.(I prefer you to have look there instead of me copying everything back here)

    2) I have 2 hard drives C

G41 regardless of the model but anyway I had been to the link you
provided before and I have downloaded all related drivers and ran the

I would like to pay your attention to the following points:

    1) please have a look into this lenovo forum link which you can find
detailed messages of my problem. I would like you to specially have a
look at the detailed audio device description PC doctor gives to see if
you can find any abnormalities.(I prefer you to have look there instead
of me copying everything back here)

    2) I have 2 hard drives C & D and I only formatted C with file system FAT32.

    3) My speakers were working before I started to format.

    4) would it be possible for you to have access to my laptop through remote assistance?

    5) is the order of driver installation important? for example I installed intel chipset utility after most of the drivers were installed.

    6) on the IBM website it gives 2 different installation guides: before installing the OS and after the installation. I installed the Intel chipset utility after I had formatted the C drive.

it has been 10 days that I have been trying to configure this problem and to be honest I think the best and fastest way to solve this issue is you to have direct access to my laptop through remote assistance to see if you can find any abnormalities.

This question seems to have been around for several hours. I am not sure if you've tried extracting the files and installing it from the Device Manager. This is only possible if it shows up on the Device Manager.

If you haven't tried this and unknown device is shown on the lists of the Device Manager, let me know, I can help you with this.

Thanks.

Hi! Alright, have you downloaded the sound driver on LENOVO site? This may help and I strongly suggest that you download the motherboard driver too. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

The same model ThinkPad can have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

You have a tough problem and I don't know if I can assist.

If the Sounds and Audio Devices' in control panel everything is grey, then either the driver didn't get install or corrupted or the audio chip is faulty.

1st Check the BIOS setting - is the onboard audio device enabled (there may not have a setting for this)?

2nd. Uninstall the audio driver, then reboot the laptop and install the audio driver.

3rd. Download the audio driver from this site, and see if this works, it appears to be the same version you downloaded from the Lenovo WEB site

    http://www.downloadatoz.com/driver/downl...

4th. Go to Device Manager - Audio driver and update driver, let it get the driver from the Internet

5th. Other driver download sites you can try -

    Driver Detective
    http://www.drivershq.com/

    Driver Guide
    http://driverguide.com

    Driver Updates

    http://www.driversupdate.org/

    If nothing work -

There is a possibility that the audio chip on the motherboard is faulty. If this is the case to get sound from your laptop you can add PCMCIA sound card plus external speakers.

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy is a good solution. Check this site.

Best of luck, let me know how things turn out.

I have IBM Lenovo Thinpad R61e had formatted windows and installed Windows XP service pack 2. I tried downloading and installing the drivers manually but my computer doesnt playback any sound even though...

If you were to log on to the ibm.com web site, usually one is able to download if available, by model number, Customer Instruction Manuals, list of Dealers, for spare parts and service, Driver downloads and Installation Instructions as required.

This is the best way of ensuring up to date drivers for your system and they are free of charge!

There are no XP drivers to be found with Microsoft as XP is no longer supported.

Some manufacturers may have a limited number of Drivers still listed.

I hope this helps.
