SOURCE: can I use a router with a modem connection

erm dude your modem connection doesn't go in the router. It will either not fit or fry the router.

Anyways, You should have a cord with it that can go in the computer or (Maybe dsl box if you got one, then put the other cord into the computer)
If you got a cord that goes in the computer put it to share the internet connect (right click it on the modem connection and click properties then advanced then Share my connection (XP, VISTA, WINDOWS 7 ONLY))

How do I prevent my neighbor from using my wireless router?

If you do not have any wireless network security enabled on the router, your neighbor can see this SSID and connect to the network without authorization. While this is generally frowned upon as being unethical, it is technically not illegal as you have "made the network available" by failing to secure it. The easiest way to secure the network is through the use of a WEP key or a WPA pass-phrase. WEP keys are generally 5, 10, 13 or 26 randomly generated characters long. WPA pass-phrases are just that - a phrase such as "The sun is yellow". Either method will prevent unauthorized users from accessing your network. Only those individuals who possess the key or pass-phrase are granted access.

These options is located under the Wireless > Wireless Security tabs from within the router administration. After login you can change the password.

How can I be sure my linksys security is up to date without the original disc that came with the router? I am trying to be sure that my linksys is not an open gateway for neighbors to steal access from...

Hi,
If you want to make sure that the signal from your router is secured, the only way you need to do about that is to put in a password or passphrase before connecting to the wireless connection. that is the security the router can give you. unless they know the code. they wont be able to connect to your router freely. and about the updates on the linksys, it is ok not to update at this point. and even if you dont have your disc. the router will still work. the disc only give you a software for the router to connect automatically. while windows can already give you that option.

Hope this helps. thank you for using Fixya,

Hi, I am trying to get my new Acer up and running. It will not connect to the internet. It is asking me to type in the network security key. I have no idea what it is asking for. Please help.

Its the password for your network. If your trying to use someone elses network you need to ask them. If it yours then you should know your security password for your network.

Can I connect my ps3 to the internet using a secured connection from my neighbor with no router?

If you mean, can you use your neighbor's wireless with your PS3, then yes. Potentially. First, you'll want to have the permission of your neighbor, for legal reasons. Not to mention if their wireless is Secured, your going to need their assistance in connecting the PS3 to that router. If you have their blessing, then just follow the steps on the PS3 to set up a connection, and have your neighbor in the room or on the phone to give you the information when you need it.

If your trying to get access without them knowing, don't bother. If the connection is secure, your gonna waste a lot of time for nothing.

Am i able to connect to the internet using WLAN without te security keys (WEP)

If the wireless network that you are trying to connect, is unsecured then you can connect without the WEP key.
but if the wireless network is secured then you will need the KEY or the password for the wireless network. Without the key you won't be able to connect to the secured wireless network.
If you have the router then you can check the wireless settings of the router and find the wireless network key.

Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. Then click on wireless then wireless security then enable WEP security enter Password then apply and save settings then restart router . Then only those can connect who know that password. . Wireless router connection unsecured

Open a browser and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1
It'll prompt you for a username and password, if you used the Linksys Installation CD, remember the username and password that you provided. Else, leave the username blank and key in admin for the password.

Once inside the router, click the Wireless Tab then the Wireless Security sub-tab.
Enable and choose WPA Personal and provide a password for your wireless network at the WPA Shared Key section.
Click Save settings at the bottom.

Your computers will need to reconnect to your network and asked for the security password.
