Question about Nelson Sprinkler: Traveling Tractor

1 Answer

I have a Nelson traveling tractor and the shutoff button housing is cracked and sprays water out. Do I have to replace the whole box or can I replace just the bottom part that has the water shut off button?

Brand new nelson tractor sprinkler runs for about 20 minutes and then stops. water pressure is fine

Too heavy a hose can cause this (after 20 minutes, there's just too much hose behind the sprinkler to drag any further).
If the unit shuts off entirely, the sprinkler could be hitting the top of the hose (wheels digging into soft soil) and tripping the auto shutoff under the unit. (Mine does this every once in a while).

Our Nelson tractor sprinkler is going backwards! How do we correct this?

You need to aim the rotary arms in the opposite direction. If the spray pattern is spinning clockwise, then you need to make it spin counter-clockwise or vice-versa. You do this by adjusting each of the 2 arms 180 degrees so that the jet stream spurts right instead of left (or left instead of right). Remember, the spray arms are connected to a gear box, and the gear box turns the wheels. Your wheels are moving in the wrong direction because the gears are moving in the wrong direction because the spray arms are spinning in the wrong direction because they are aimed in the wrong direction.

My 9 year old Nelson raintrain leaks (gushes) water out of transmission housing (at about a rate of 50%) Sprinkler will still operate but at a considerably reduced rate.

not knowing that model,, look for a gasket that can be replaced, if not, the case itself has probably cracked, a local welding shop may be able to repair the crack.

Our raintrain has worked for years....but now it is leaking out of the bottom causing it to get stuck often......please help us!!!!

I think your valve is shot. There is a button underneath that is pushed up by the ramp. It then closes the valve. The valve is leaking and lowering your water pressure causing your sprinkler to get stuck.

You could replace the valve but that requires disassembly of the gear box. The gears inside may be worn too so, I am suggesting that you just replace the gear box. Replacing the gear box will give you all new moving (and sealing) parts. This web site has a box for about 1/2 to 1/4 the price of a new sprinkler.

I have a Nelson traveling tractor for at least 12 years, now. No problem until this week. While traveling tractor was watering yard it turned over in some softer sand - which it has done previously - and...

I think that you need a new gear box. Your unit is 12 years old and the valve inside (the box) probably became separated from the "button" you pull down. Getting a new valve would solve your problem but, it would have to be installed inside the gear box. Since the gears may be worn (after 12 years) - I recommend a new gear box. This would solve your problem and prevent future "worn out" problems. This also saves you assembly of small parts.
