How do I clean the filter

The foam filter can be hand washed, squeezed and them dried.
The pleated filter really never seems to loose it stall smell after cleaning. It's best to tap it against the hard ground to free the dirt.
Washing it can cause odors.

Tip

Fed up having to buy new filters for your vacuum?

Over the years I've lost count of how many companies stop selling replacement filters for their long deceased production vacuum models or that filter replacements are becoming increasingly difficult to source. There are usually universal "microfilter" replacements which are easy enough to find and cut to size, but if you can't be bothered to do that, there are ways around to renew your existing filter even if the manufacturer or the user manual states that the filter cannot be washed.

You see, any filter can actually be washed - if it is a single cloth filter - as opposed to a micro pleated section of many layers sewn together. If you have such a filter, a single cloth filter which the user manual says cannot be washed, this is a blatant lie. Remove the motor filter as normal (usually found at the bottom where the paper bag goes) if it is embedded with dirt and wash under a hot tap of water with either household washing up liquid or soap. Once the filter has been completely cleaned, place the filter into a pillow case and chuck into an electric dryer on a low heat. Instead of waiting 24 hours normally for a filter to dry to room temperature, you'll cut your waiting time by a day simply by allowing the gentle heat from the electric dryer to circulate around the pillow case which holds your vacuum cleaner filter. Once the filter is completely dry to the touch and does not feel damp in any way, install back into the vacuum cleaner.

I have also done this with HEPA paper filters which apparently are not washable according to the manual, and to stop the plastic cartridges from bouncing off the walls of your electric clothing dryer/tumble dryer put an extra towel or cloth into the pillow case to minimise damage. What is then revealed is a new, dry and clean filter which can be used again instead of spending lots of money trying to source a new one.

At the same time, if your vacuum cleaner has a soft bag, take it off and put it into the washing machine to give it a clean lease of life - but you won't need to put it into a pillow case to dry in the electric dryer - simply chuck the bag in to ensure it gets dried properly before putting it back onto your vacuum cleaner.

Won't turn on

If it comes back on after a while it may have overheated from a clog or the filters need cleaned or replaced.

My Dyson Animal vacuum smells horribly of dog. It's worse than my dog has ever smelled - even at his worst. How do I take apart the Animal to clean it properly? Can I use a weak water/Chlorox solution...

hi Donna.
Complete removal of pet hair from the home is a quandary many pet owners face. The Dyson Animal series vacuums use centrifugal force to remove animal hair from carpets, floors, curtains and upholstery. The high-powered vacuum is bagless, allowing you to extract pet hair from surfaces without worrying about running out of vacuum bags. As your Dyson Animal vacuum is exposed to pet hair and dander, a smell can develop. Similar to other small appliances, a vacuum needs periodic cleaning to keep it looking and smelling clean. When you use basic cleaning and deodorizing techniques, you can get the smell out of your Dyson Animal vacuum.

Step 1

Remove the bagless receptacle for pet hair according to the directions provided for your Dyson Animal vacuum. Hold the receptacle upside down inside a trash bag and tap the bottom to remove pet hair and dirt.

Step 2

Mix 1/2 tsp. of dishwashing detergent with 1/2 gallon of warm water in a bucket. Dip a clean cloth into the soap solution and wring it out.

Step 3

Wash the inside and outside of the receptacle with the cloth to remove dirt and dander that cause odor. Rinse the receptacle with a cloth dampened with water. Dry it thoroughly with another cloth.

Step 4

Remove the HEPA filter from your Dyson Animal vacuum. Pick visible clumps of pet hair off the filter and discard them. Flush the filter with cool water to wash out dirt and hair. Rinse the filter until the water runs clean. Gently squeeze the filter and allow it to air-dry for up to 12 hours to ensure it dries completely.

Step 5

Moisten a cloth with undiluted vinegar. Wipe off the exterior of the vacuum with the vinegar. Deodorize the receptacle and interior areas, where the bagless receptacle and filter go, by wiping them with the vinegar-moistened cloth. Dry the vacuum with a clean cloth.

Step 6

Place two drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball. Drop the cotton ball into the receptacle before securing it to the vacuum to prevent odor from building up. Vanilla extract is an effective natural odor absorber.

hope this helps you out.

My Eureka Lite speed whirlwind has a bad odor when it runs.

It is either the filter or on the roller or belt.

Electrolux vacuum cleaner z4703 doesn't start

HI It could be the a number of issues.
The actual power switch could be at fault and needs replaced which has to be done by an official repairer.
OR if the vacuum cut out initially wait for a day and then try it again.
Also if the filters have been cleaned check that there is no dirt stopping the motor from coming on i.e. check the beater bar (remove the hood if neccessary) and check the drive belt is intact, also check all tubes to see there is no clogging.
If you have cleaned the filters you need to make sure they are dry rather than damp to wet as water seeping into a motor is very dangerous.

Deodorizing the vacuum

First of all Clean out the vacum cleaner . Empty canister and take filter outside and hit on something to get all dust out . Now wash canister and filter with vinegar water and let dry before using vacum again. You might try using carpet fresh for pet odors on carpet and empty and clean canister and filter regularly. I own a cleaning business and this is a hard problem to solve with all vac. cleaners. Good Luck!!

Dirt Devil Purpose for Pets suddenly stopped vacuuming, totally cutting off. Checked plug and outlet for problems which were negative.

I had this same problem. All of a sudden it shuts off while vacuuming and then i'd have to wait a while before it would turn back on. Finally it stopped working period. Before going out to buy a new vacuum, I decided to take the thing apart and clean it up really good. That included running a clothes hanger through the tubes to get all the stuck hair out, removing the roller and getting all the hair untangled from it, and rinsing out the air filters (both the sponge and the plastic piece with the paper like filter) with hot water. Then you let the filters dry for a day or two. The plastic/paper filter takes longer to dry so I used a hair dryer. The vacuum itself is not hard to take apart. I think there are only 11 total screws you need to take out. After the filters dried I put them back in the newly cleaned vacuum and it worked like new. I think the main problem was the condition of the filters. They can get pretty filthy over time, which will limit the air flow to the motor. With less air the motor is more likely to overheat and shut off. So keep your filters clean and you shouldn't have any proplems.
