Hi,
If there is a bit of oil coming out of the shaft end of the motor I would not worry about it...or even the opposite end for that matter... the only oil in there is for bearing lubrication and that can be replaced through a small oil cap usually placed right over each bearing... a few drops of oil in there monthly is common and therefore it is also common for that oil to work out and drip a bit....
I really think you have a normal issue there and just meed to wipe it up and replace with a few drops periodically as you use the motor...

Gas engine I assume since your referring to the oil in the motor
the crank seal or the case gasket is leaking

Hi. There are two possible causes for an oil leak. One is that the oil reservoir was over filled. The other is that the ring is going bad and will eventually need to be replaced.

If someone added oil recently, I would suspect that they added too much oil. Drain the oil out and refill with the correct amount. J.

Craftsman Air Comp. 6 hp oil-less, 33 gal horz. tank - sounds really loud

Sources of noise from craftsman oil free compressors (could be Made by Campbell Hausfeld or Porter Cable) include loose fan, failing bearing/s on the piston rod and housing, failing seal ring on piston, air filter intake and loose motor mounts. With the housing cover off, check the fan blade for cracks or loose screw. Turn motor by hand till the piston is at top of stroke. Examine the cylinder for scratches close to top. If scratched, air is leaking past vinyl ring making noise and causing longer fill time. If everything looks ok, suspect noise coming from bearings. Hard to tell if bearings are failing by looking at them. I have seen many failures of the piston bearing on the crank (fairly easy to change, I use alternator bearing from auto parts ) , however, the bearing in the housing just behind the crank bearing is much harder to replacable. Good luck with your fix-it project.

Some of the craftsmen compressors have pistons that are coated on the top of the dome. Once the coating wears off, they have severe loud piston slap. If you continue to run it the way it is, it will snap the connecting rod in half or break the piston and possibly the cylinder.

I have a 3 gal/ 1HP Craftsman air comp. When I plug it in and turn it on, I get the sound of current getting to the motor but it does not start. A failed Starting capacitor?

Could be, do you have a capacitor checker? It sounds like you have a compressor locked up. Do you have oil in the compressor? If the compressor is new I would take it back and see if it is still under warranty. before I did any thing to it.....

I would say that the gauge needs to be replaced. These are common items so go to any auto parts or craftsman hardware store and purchase a replacement.

be sure to use some joint compound or teflon tape on the threads so u dont have any leaks.

Builds pressure, will not cycle back on and leaks fluid

Your compressor is most likely made by Campbell Hausfeld. The oily substance could be leaking from the capacitor on the motor. Remove the cover and examine the capacitor for failure. There is a value printed on the cap. (uf) The cap must measure to within 95% of printed value. A failing capacitor will cause the hum that you are experiencing.
