We figured it out~
While talking to someone, press the arrow button that points to the right.
We kept pressing the up button, to no avail, as that would have made much more sense to me.

most phones have a volume control on the left side near the top of the phone. So while talking to someone on the phone you use these to up or lower the call volume.
If it is to do with ring volume suggest you download user manual as it is difficult to explain the settings if you have no smart phone experience. google the model number of the phone with the term

most phones only allow you to increase/decrease volume of earpiece whilst your in a call. Whilst making a call the buttons on side of phone (up/down) should allow you to adjust volume. Sometimes these buttons also allow adjustment of ringer volume when not in a call. Hope that helps?
