Question about Royal Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I have an old electric Royal Academy typewriter. It is getting power, but will not type. I took it apart and oiled all of the parts, but the keys still will not type. I can move the arms for each letter easily and it does still move the carriage when they strike, but the keyboard does not work. The tab key and shift keys work, but not the space bar, return or any of the letters. Any ideas?

I figured it out!!The fanbelt is broken,If you open it up, and you look on the left, there is a reddish purple string, it needs to be fixed or replaced

How do I fix the Royal Academy Electric Typewriter 1980's, when I have the power on, it works, but the keys doesn't work at all.

You may have a broken belt. They are no longer made but if you have a good hardware store you can get a long "O" ring and use it as a replacement.

Royal typewriter drive belt

The belts are no longer made but if you have a good hardware store (not a big box store) you can get a long "O" ring that will work. The ribbons are pretty common I have them in stock.

Royal typewriter drive belt

Knowing that those haven't been built in many years, I'd first try to source it from antique dealers (not the 'junk shops' that call themselves antique shops) They typically have a decent list of places to get parts for such machines.
If that doesn't pan out and you have the actual broken belt you could do a measure (around the belt the width and the height (and if a 'v' the approx. angle of the 'V") and see if you can have Gates make you one. (this will not be cheap).

Pulled my old Royal Academy out of storage and the keys and carriage won't move. The power turns on, but it won't do anything.

The belt ( usually a flat belt) is stretched, broken or needs cleaned. You can clean it with denatured alcohol and a cotton swab. Don 't have the unit on while doing this. After you clean the belt, turn it on. Might have to clean it a couple of times.
Hope this helps,
