Hello,

Plastic is one of the few new chemical materials which pose environmental problem. Polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene is largely used in the manufacture of plastics. Synthetic polymers are easily molded into complex shapes, have high chemical resistance, and are more or less elastic. Some can be formed into fibers or thin transparent films. These properties have made them popular in many durable or disposable goods and for packaging materials. These materials have molecular weight ranging from several thousands to 1,50,000. Excessive molecular size seems to be mainly responsible for the resistance of these chemicals to biodegradation and their persistence in soil environment for a long time.

Plastic in the environment is regarded to be more an aesthetic nuisance than a hazard, since the material is biologically quite inert. The plastic industry in the US alone is $ 50 billion per year and is obviously a tempting market for biotechnolo gical enterprises. Biotechnological processes are being developed as an alternative to existing route or to get new biodegradable biopolymers . 20% of solid municipal wastes in US is plastic. Non-degradable plastics accumulate at the rate of 25 million tonnes per year. According to an estimate more than 100 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year all over the world. In India it is only 2 million tonnes. In India use of plastic is 2 kg per person per year while in European countries it is 60 kg per person per year while that in US it is 80 kg per person per year.
Plastics are used because they are easy and cheap to make and they can last a long time. Unfortunately these same useful qualities can make plastic a huge pollution problem. Because the plastic is cheap it gets discarded easily and its persistence in the environment can do great harm. Urbanisation has added to the plastic pollution in concentrated form in cities. Plastic thrown on land can enter into drainage lines and chokes them resulting into floods in local areas in cities as experienced in Mumbai, India in 1998. It was claimed in one of the programmes on TV Channel that eating plastic bags results in death of 100 cattles per day in U.P. in India. In stomach of one dead cow, as much as 35 kg of plastic was found. Because plastic does not decompose, and requires high energy ultra-violet light to break down, the amount of plastic waste in our oceans is steadily increasing. More than 90% of the articles found on the sea beaches contained plastic. The plastic rubbish found on beaches near urban areas tends to originate from use on land, such as packaging material used to wrap around other goods.

Take care.

simply pull the plastic tab out
then push the crown back in
the battery is energized when the stem ( crown) is pushed all the way in
it is used to stop the crown from making contact during storage before sale so ensuring that a new battery is installed on purchase

I opened the package and dont know how to turn it on!

mcdevito75 Here, It must be a Quartz watch, look for a very small piece of plastic just under the stem, remove that piece of plastic, push the stem down and your watch should start. OR!! look on the back cover of your watch, carefully, if you see a plastic tab comming out of the back cover, remove by pulling carefully on that plastic tab, this plastic tab is keeping the battery from grounding, thus saveing battery power but also not letting your watch run. Simply reove this tab by carefully pulling on it.

How can i repair scratches on a plastic caravan window

Plastic polish comes in a variety of grits to help buff out scratches in a wide variety of plastics. Novus is a popular brand; their stuff comes in 3 grades: #1 for very fine scratches, #2 for moderate scratches, and #3 for deep / rugged scratches. I generally use #2 polish; #3 polish leaves smaller scratches behind that must be buffed out using #2 polish. Auto repair shops also sell plastic polishes. You might also be able to use automotive rubbing compound, if you don't have access to plastic polish. In a pinch, you can also use traditional white toothpaste, as it contains mild grit (that's how your teeth get polished, after all). Note that toothpaste may also leave behind small scratches.

In terms of hardware, some people use a rotary buffer (like you'd use with car wax) to apply the polishing compound. I have tended to leave swirl marks when I use one. Some people use a Dremel rotary tool, but the super-fast rotational speed can melt/burn the plastic if you apply too much pressure. I prefer to use a soft, all-cotton cloth (an old washcloth or tube sock turned inside out works well), with a dab of polish on it. For straight line linear scratches, I generally run the polish along the scratch to lift out any paint, etc, and to soften the walls of the scratch. This alone usually makes the scratch a lot less visible. However, to finish the buffing, it's good to polish in a circular motion to feather the areas immediately surrounding the scratch into the scratch area.

Some plastics are tougher to polish than others. Super-hardened plastics and some polycarbonates will not clear up using these methods. Most, however, will at least look better after you've done a bit of polishing, even if the scratches don't completely disappear.

Plastic portion of band split

you will have to purchase a new band since you cannot fix the plastic. If under warranty it might be replaced by Cartier , I am not 100 percent sure on their band replacements for plastic bands.

You might be able to find a band cheaper on ebay

How do I change the battery/ies for the watch? The red light still functions, but the timepiece does not.

I took a clip watch to the Mall today and had the battery replaced at the Dakota Kiosk. It cost $10. They used a tiny knife to pry off the back. I was trying to use a screwdriver and that didn't work.

Hello, I just bought a Timex Acqua with Indiglo

Depending on when you bought your Timex, you shouldn"t need a battery just yet, your Timex came with a good battery. Look under the stem (winder) for a small piece of plastic that is not allowing the stem to go all the way down, remove that piece of plastic and push the stem down and your Timex will start. Or if your Timex has buttons, look for a tab of plastic on the back cover, this tab of plastic is keeping the battery from (ground) a complete circuit remove this tab of plastic to start your Timex. Changeing the battery while fairly easy, you"d need jewelers screwdrivers and of course the new battery, Best Bet, look for a small watch repair shop in your area for the battery change.

The plastic piece that keeps the battery in place is broken.(F16059/4) is the watch

mcdevito75 here, This is a piece of plastic is used betwen the battery and the back cover of the watch as without the plastic there is a small gap between the battery and the back cover, meaning the battery could come loose in the watch even with the back cover on the watch, replace this plastic piece with some carefully folded Scotch Tape, cut and shape the Scotch tape to Approx. the same size and thicknesss of this piece of plastic or just by sight thick enough to keep the battery in place in the watch with the back cover on.

Hour-hand fell off clock

Plastic clock glasses are fitted on clocks in two different ways:
1) Clip-on plastic glass;
Check carefully all around the plastic glass and find where the clips are positioned. Insert the screwdriver between the glass and clock bezel and use the lever action to unclip it. Do the same to all clips following one by one till the glass come loose.
2) Glued plastic glasses;
Do exactly the same as described above, just this time go bit by bit all around the glass till it come loose.
NOTE: In both cases the plastic glass can crack if you are not expierenced in such an action! Start with ease and do not force that plastic glass too hard.

Rate me, please.
