Have a sony LCD tv # KDL-40XBR5 that has an extreme double image on the rt side of screen ( images as much as 6" to 10" apart) when its first turned on and then at other intermittent times even after warmed up. The condition doesn't usually last a long time. Have already replaced the inverter bd but it didn't fix problem. What needs to be changed next. Thanks

Only thing I got on your email concerning a firmware update referenced a pinkish pix and my problem is a double image, do you have another firmware reference about double images???? Thanks

  • riverofpines Sep 03, 2010

If the condition effects the menu/or ch# display it would be the panel. Found that when condition was present tapping the back/center of the rear cover would make it work okay ---did check all plugs/cables for bad connections but they checked okay. Interesting to note that when set was working tapping set would not make it go bad.

Hi. This model is among few TVs known for having firmware problems. This has published by Sony on a service bulletin distributed to technicians.

Contact Sony and get the firmware update for this model. If that does not fix the problem, then it is either a faulty main controller board or a problem with the LCD panel (in this last case TV would be beyond repair if not still under warranty). PSU must also be tested.

Here the service bulletin:

It has come to our attention that a limited number of BRAVIA® televisions may display a pinkish (pink tinted) picture when connected via HDMI™ to devices such as DVD players or A/V receivers. The pinkish picture may appear under the following circumstances:

  • When powering on the television or the connected device
  • When changing the input source or inserting the HDMI cable while the television and device are powered on

We have determined that this only occurs in a limited number of televisions manufactured before November, 2007.

Affected Television Models

  • KDL-40W3000
  • KDL-40XBR4

Resolution Sony has developed a software update for your television which will resolve this pink screen issue. This software update is installed via a USB Self-Service Software Update that Sony will ship to you at no charge. Please note this software update only addresses the pink screen which occurs with a device connected via HDMI. Screen condition and normal television viewing will not be affected or changed. All terms of your Sony limited warranty continue to apply.
If you have experienced this issue and wish to order the Self-Service Software Update, please verify that your model number is KDL-46XBR5 and then click the "Order Update" button.

There is also a not on your warranty status:

Attention owners of KDL-40XBR5, KDL-46XBR5, and KDL-52XBR5 televisions,

Due to a printing error on the warranty card included with your set, the time period stated may be incorrect. The correct warranty period is 18 months from the date of purchase for parts and labor. (Some warranty cards may incorrectly have stated that the period was limited to one-year.)

If you would like to view or download a copy of the correct warranty card, please use the Manuals/Specs/Warranty link on this web site for your model.

Sony apologizes for any confusion this mistake may have caused. All other terms of your limited warranty continue to apply.

If you have any other questions please contact Sony at 1-800-222-SONY (7669) for more information.

If that does not fix the problem, then the main board must be tested and eventually replaced. Here parts:Sony TV Parts | ShopJimmy

Hi,
Symptom shows it is problem of T-Con board that is located at top center of lcd panel at rear side. It would be covered with metal shield.
Below exploded view will help you to locate it easily.
Replace t-con board to solve double image problem on right side of tv. Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

I could use some help. I have double imaging at startup of the 40xbr5. Sony won't repair or cover problem. Basically told me to go away. I'm not yet getting duplication of problem once it warms up. Technician told me it was the whole lcd panel, but I find it hard to believe since after it warms up it is fine. Any feedback is appreciated. Can I purchase only the tcon board?

How to replace the T-Con board on the Sony KDL-40XBR5 40 in. HDTV LCD

Hello
It is a skilled work. You have to download your Sony set's' service manual to go forward. It will have all the details of detching the present damaged T 'Con board, and how to replace it. All setails will be there in the service manual. It will be very difficult to get a free download of it. So many sites will have the service manual to your set, all are paid.

It sounds like you might have a defective LCD panel. Your warranty for your TV is 18 months. Some of these models the warranty was mis-printed and said only 12 months.

My flat screen tv shuts off and standby led blinks 13 times.

Our $2700 less than 3 year old Sony LCD KDL-40XBR5 did the same thing 2 weeks ago. Sony was anything but helpful. They said to take it to a repair shop or we could send them $550 and they would replace it with a $800 set. Repairman says that it is a panel and the part has been discontinued by Sony. The 46" sets had the same problem and were recalled but not the 40" screen. We stopped on the way home and purchased a 40"

I have a sony Bravia KDL-52W3000 LCD tv. Approx.

I have the same tv with the same problem. My tv is about 3 1/2 years old. I took it to the shop yesterday and today they told me that I had a bad lcd panel and a bad FL1 circuit board. They also told me it was going to be $3800.00 dollars to fix. I am now on my way to buy another tv, needless to say it will not be a Sony. Sony knows about this problem and refuse to do anything about it. Good luck.

Lines or doubling on one side of screen

The last Sony LCD set I had with a problem a bit like this had a bad LCD drive board. This is the board at the top of the set--that connects between the LCD panel and the main board.
