Question about General Electric GSHS5PGXSS Stainless Steel Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

Fridge GE-GSHS5PGX-SS. This fridge is 5 days over its 1 year warrantee. (of course another GE POS). Issue: Ice maker not making ice. Water Filter has been changed. Water Dispenser working fine and flows great. Ice swtich is set to "ON". I filled the reservior with water from a cup, and it made ice several hours later. (That was last night) This morning, it appeared to have new ice on top of the dispenser waiting to fall in the tray, but the cubes were very small by approx 50% of size. It appears that the fingers did its swipe but I waited and waited to see if water would fill it up, but it appears it didn't. (But then I am not sure if it would fill while I had the freezer door opened). 20 mins later I took a Q'tip and dipped it in the ice maker water reserior to see if it contained water. The Q'tip was totally dry. I pulled the fridge from the wall to see if any hoses were crimped but did not see any crimped hoses. I believe the automatic water reservior is not getting filled with water. For the money of this unit, it is a real disappointment. What a piece of junk compared to my 20 yo Kenmore that gave no issues.

Water supply to water dispenser works fine.
Where is the water inlet valve, can it be removed and clean?
What is the handle on the valve and what position should it be in? Got any pictures?
Water pressure is good, city water, not well water.
Filter? I installed a new water filter in the fridge. Is there another filter you are referring to?
Your solution is to vague without details or pictures for me to trace the issue. First what do I trace to first ensure I get water?

Experts answer is too vague and my response back was as follows:

Water inlet valve. It has two valves, one for the icemaker and one for the water. I suspect that it either isn't getting a signal or the valve has failed. The water inlet valve is located at the lower rear freezer. Locate the water supply line coming into the valve and turn it off at the source (typically under the sink). Disconnect the supply line from the valve and place it into a container to catch any water the may spill out. Remove the screws securing the inlet valve in place. Check fig of the valve:-- Fridge GE-GSHS5PGX-SS.
This fridge is 5 - 26fb1f9.jpg

The water inlet valve is connected by two wires or four wires. Label the wire placement on the water inlet valve before disconnecting the wires. The wires are connected to the terminals with slip on connectors. Firmly pull the connectors off of the terminals (do not pull on the wire). You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers to remove the connectors. Inspect the connectors and the terminals for corrosion. If the connectors are corroded they should be replaced. Hello,

If the ice cubes are smaller or larger than the normal sized ice cubes and the shape seems to be irregular, there might be problems with the water supply. The ice maker could be malfunctioning due to a faulty water inlet valve. In case, the handle on the valve is not in the right position, fluctuations in the water pressure could result in the irregular shape and size of the ice cubes. Ice maker might also not be able to work due to clogging of the water supply valve. A blockage in the filter could also obstruct the water flow. You might have to consider ice maker repair in case the valve contains a bad coil.

Take care.

    Hello,

An ice maker, as you all know is an appliance in your refrigerator's
freezer that makes ice cubes. The ice maker receives water through a
quarter inch pipe placed behind the refrigerator,
which in turn is connected to the water pipe and tap valve. As and when
water is needed, the valve lets the water flow through a fill tube into
the ice maker assembly and thus, the water gets frozen into ice cubes. A
thermostat is attached to the ice maker to monitor the temperature.
Once the ice is ready, the ice cubes are pushed by the ejector blades
into a bin till it is full. Now that you are aware about the functioning
of an ice maker, you need to identify the ice maker problems that might
    be causing trouble.

With your ice maker not working properly, you might be wondering the
reason behind the malfunctioning of your ice maker. Several factors
could be involved in case your ice maker is not making any ice at all.
It might be caused due to a defect in the water supply line. It could be
possible that the water valve isn't getting any water. Check the water
line at the back of the freezer for any blockage. Look for the water
shut-off valve placed behind the refrigerator or under the sink and turn
    it off.

Next step would be to unscrew the copper line located at the back of the
refrigerator. Now place the copper line in a bucket and turn on the
valve to check if pressurized water comes out. The problem could also be
linked to a defective tap valve. You could have it replaced. Since,
freezer temperature can also be responsible for ice maker
malfunctioning, make sure the freezer is not too warm.

Ice maker is on but is not producing ice

The ice maker is probably not getting water. Have you heard the water valve click on and off to allow water to flow to the ice maker? If you get chilled water from the fridge, the ice maker's water valve will probably sound very similar to when you dispense chilled water. Try the water to listen for it. Then, listen for it over the course of an hour or so to determine if the ice maker is doing the same thing. If you hear it - then there may be a blockage in the line or filter.

If you don't have provisions to get chilled water from your fridge (ice only) or notice that you can't get water from your fridge any more: Make sure the water supply is on and.. that supply line isn't kinked or got crushed when the fridge was pushed back into position. This is a pretty common occurrence. If you don't hear any water valve clicking, the valve itself may have failed or there may be a problem with the electrical circuit. Hopefully, you won't have to got beyond this, but if so - let us know.

Good luck!

Check to see if there is any obstruction (object of any kind) in the ice cube mold area. If nothing found, you will have to replace the icemaker, as individual repair parts are not available.

GE side by side - upper freezer warming once a week then freezing

Had the same problem. Bottom of freezer was about the right temp but the upper part was way too warm. Fridge side was fine. Ice maker stopped making ice - it wasn't broken, but it won't run through its cycle if the temp is too high. Cubes already in storage hopper melted and water refroze as it ran to lower, colder part of fridge. Problem: Fan controller for freezer compartment was faulty. The fan itself was fine. Fix: GE replaced the main circuit board that controls everything on this model, including the freezer compartment fan. Once that was done, temp returned to normal, ice maker is happy again. The board had undergone several revisions from the factory installed one (could tell this by comparing the part number on the old and new boards - they increment it when they revise it.) Bad news: the part/labor were expensive and of course failed after the warranty ran out. Good news: the board is now guaranteed for 5 yrs. (Why wouldn't the factory-installed board ALSO be good for five years instead of just one? It's not like the replacement boards are made better.) Labor is covered only for 90 days though so it won't be free if they have to come back after that.

GE Fridge Not Dispensing water

First place to start is in the fridge. Look behind the crisper drawers for the water tank. It may have frozen at the outlet line. Try thawing it out with a hair dryer or a heat gun, being careful of course not to melt anything.

Ice Maker No Longer Works - Water Works fine

Not sure if this will work for you - I had a similar problem with a Kenmore fridge. I removed the ice tray and found a piece of ice stuck where the ice is made and dropped into the tray. Once I clear this obstruction, the ice maker worked again. Also, check for the mechanism that indicates that the ice tray is full. This may be jammed or malfunctionin.
