If the drive is corrupt in one PC it will still be corrupt in another.

There are apps for recovery and attempted repair of HDD's but you have to weigh off the cost of the apps against cost of neww HDD.

go to BIOS and change the SATA mode to IDE. it worked for me.
original instructions:
also You have to turn OFF (disable) the boot from network. The error your seeing is result of the network boot rom not finding PXE server to boot from. Again, be sure to disable boot from network.
PLUS it seems if only 128 MB is showing as memory then the memory sticks might be damaged and not able to retain information/data to complete the installation process. Best take them out clean it properly & replace & try again. Nothing to do with BIOS!

Check to see if the BIOS can see the HDD. If it can, check to see if the hdd is damaged(80GB is an old hdd so it could have been mishandled).

To Enter the BIOS, you can press the F2 key when the computer boots up.

To check the HDD, use the diagnostic tools on UBCD.

UBCD is free and it will require a blank CD. Follow the intructions on the download page if you do not know how to burn an ISO. Also, you may need to press a certain key to boot from CDs or make sure the BIOS boot order is set correctly.

Good luck.

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

Missing operating system

missing operating system message usually means that your HDD is pooched, or corrupted
check your bios settings to check that it can still "see your HDD"

if you can hear your hard drive going "click, click, click" when attempting to boot, that is usually a bad sign

to perform setup use orignal recovery setup disk or OS disks of your choice (BOOT from CD) to install OS from scratch.

HDD not reconigized

You need to press F2 or Del on start up and enter the bios to get your hard drive recognised, normally F10 to auto identify or select automatic. You will have to select the advanced cmos settings and set your cdrom as first boot device and insert your XP cd save settings and exit, as the system wont boot because of the hardware change, so you will need to let it install the setup files, then use the option to press R to repair the system or enter to install windows again.

Can't start up the laptop as Media test failure

You may have to go back into the bios and see if there is an option to automatically find HDD, or you may have to manually enter them in the Standard Bios Settings. It may be that the old HDD are still in the bios's recognised setup.
