Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I have a Dell Vostro 200. I just installed an older floppy drive, 3.5 inch, and thought I had everything connected and changed in setup, but I keep getting the massage"DISKETTE DRIVE 0 SEEK FAILURE". Then it says to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. F1 keeps the boot process going and completes it. F2 goes back to the BootUP screen as if I need to correct something there. What do I do now? Mike

When I go to "My Computer" it shows the 3.5 inch floppy drive along with the 2 hard drives and the 2 cd/dvd drives. I guess that means Windows recognizes it. Right? However I can't write to it or from it.

I just changed out the floppy drive with one from my other desktop computer. I know this one works because it worked in my HP desktop. After connecting everything, I still get the same message at bootup. "DISKETTE DRIVE 0 SEEK FAILURE". Then it says to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. F1 keeps the bootup going and F2 goes back to setup. There must be something else I have forgotten to change somewhere.

The floppy drive I installed from my other desktop has the ribbon cable and the power connector on the same side of the round thing on the back of the drive. The red stripe on the ribbon cable is next to the round thing where it connects to the floppy drive. The power supply connector has the red wire closest to the round thing also. The ribbon cable has the red line on the top of the connection where it connects to the mother board. I still get the same thing when I restart or re boot DISKETTE DRIVE 0 SEEK FAILURE". Then it says to press F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup.

Thanks for your help so far, I'm about ready to give it up!

I made CD-Rom first bootable and HDD second bootable. There are 2 items I can't disable, the first two, and I disabled the last item.

No drivers are needed by the checking of devices under systems. Floppy is working and driver is OK!

Thanks for all your help, I have the floppy drive working and it boots up normally. I had to reverse the cable ribbon at the mother board to make it work. Now I'll have to go see if the old floppy on my other machine actually works also. This floppy came from my other machine that I knew worked! And now it does on the Vostro, thanks again, Stelios

Using the F1 key the system is trying to boot with the next device (as they are specified in the boot order menu at the bios settings). At your case next device has to be the hard disk so the system boots up normally. Since you can't boot from the floppy I think that the problem has to be one of the following:

  • not bootable floppy diskette
  • not connected properly floppy device
  • not working floppy device
Log in at the windows and check the floppy device. Is it working properly or windows can't read - write at the diskette. In case of a problem at this state you must change the the floppy drive.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply before refusing my answer.

This means that the device is connected at the computer but it can not read or write files. With one word the floppy drive is defective. Try with another one device or use a USB stick to move the files you want.

A possible problem is the reverse connection of the power cable. Take a look at this picture:
Keep in mind that the YELLOW cable off the power strip is near the data cable (contrary to the power strip - data cable of the IDE devices).

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply. I'll try to imagine what else could be wrong and post you back.

I already checked the user manual for something strange about the floppy and I didn't noticed anything. In case you need anything further about your Vostro here is the official link for you to download drivers or the manual.
As you describe the floppy connections I think that you mean something like this:

In case this photo is closer to your case, the power's connector is reversed from your description!!!!! It's a common problem to connecting especially this connector upside - down. The system will not get any harm but the diskette will not work. I assume that you didn't make the above mistake, but I have to tell you since you have problems so far.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

Ok if the pc is recognising the floppy drive and showing in my computer that means it's drivers are installed and the unit is working properly. your first issue F1 in order to get over this thing simply go to go to setup during bootup go to advanced setup check out startup floppy seek disable it. Change the boot sequence to first boot device as CD rom second boot device as HDD disable seek other boot devices.
second issue. right click on my computers select manage go to device manager dbl click on floppy drive and check it is enabled and it is not asking for any drivers.
get one working floppy check it on other pc of yours that it is working and then try to read the contents of floppy on the problematic pc.
after doing this let me know. I am thinking about IRQ clash which I would solve if this does not makes it serviceable.

How to create hotspot in dell vostro 200 ?

Deepa christopher
Unfortunately, you cannot make the computer a hotspot without a wireless card installed. You could add a wireless card and then search the internet on how to setup the computer as a hotspot with the OS installed on the computer.

Dell Vostro 200 will not connect to internet, what can I do?

check that the lan connection isn't disabled.
go into control panel>network connections.
I would disable it and then re-enable it, that sometimes works. if there is no lan connection showing then you need to download it onto a usb stick from the dell website and install it on the vostro. Product Support Dell US

Hi, When I try to start my Dimemsion 5150C in Windows XP computer, I received one of the following error messages "Floppy diskette seek failure Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup...

The "floppy" disk-drive (3.5-inch diskette) on your computer is broken.
Press F1 to ignore the error, and to boot from your C: drive.
Or, press F2 to enter BIOS SETUP, and then navigate through those "setup" screens to tell the computer to "disable floppy seek", or change the setting from "3.5 1.44Mb drive" to "none".
Or, take the computer to a technician, and buy a replacement disk-drive, and get it installed.

My Dell 531S will not boot past the BIOS (Dell logo) screen. At first I thought it was the hard drive, since it wasn't recognizing anything connected to SATA port 1. Since then I have purchased a new...

It seems like you have multiple problems:

1. DVD-ROM drive not accessing the disk

2. unable to "disable" the "floppy" drive in BIOS SETUP

3. not recognizing anything connected to SATA1 port

It's time to take your computer to a qualified technician, for professional trouble-shooting.

Is your DELL computer still under warranty? If so, exercise the warranty.

Or, maybe you should just remove the "new" disk-drive, the RAM, the DVD-drive, and then responsibly "recycle" the old computer, and purchase a brand-new system, repurposing the disk/RAM/DVD components.

Search the net for the answer. Dell have a irritating need to used a winchester drive utility to setup new drives. This is downloaded and installed onto a 3 1/2 inch floppy or if your lucky a cd.

Disc failure 0 press F1 to continue

He has accessed the bios and change the boot setting devices by enabling the floppy drive which you do not have.

Go Bios (F1 or F2) on first screen. and select load default setting

Also go to Boot Options and make sure 1st boot is the HDD not FDD or removable disk

Also in any menu mention of Floppy Disk make sure it is set to not installed or disabled.

keep me posted
