If you will connect your desktop to one of the ethernet ports, you will need an ethernet cable. and to customize the wireless settings you can visit this link to help you change the name of the wireless network. Can you please send me the step by step configuration using d-link

To be able to most accurately answer your question, I would need more information, but I can tell you what I did with my D-link DIR-655 router. 1. With my computer and router turned off, I plugged the ethernet cable from my (cable) modem to the input on the router. 2. I then plugged an ethernet cable from the computer to one of the 4 ports on the back of my router. 3. Once the cables were connected, I then powered on the router by plugging in the power supply. 4. Then I powered on my computer. You should then be able to connect to the internet using a wired connection. At this point you'd be able to also connect to the internet wirelessly by selecting the network named dlink. 5. To configure the router to work for VOIP, gaming or secured wireless networking, you can navigate your browser to the admin configuration page on the internet.

I just bought a laptop computer and I already had a desktop. My internet provider is Hugesnet Satelite. I bought a Netgear N600 wireless dual band router thinking I could just hook it up to my desktop...

The HN9000 should have an ethernet port. You will require two ethernet cables to connect the desktop to the router.
1. Connect the ethernet cable from the Modem to the Ethernet Input port on the Router (It is generally placed away from the other ports on the back of the router.) 2. Connect another ethernet cord from one of the output ports on the router to the desktop computer. 3. On the laptop, turn on your wireless card. The process for this differs from computer to computer. If you were to provide the model of laptop, I could provide you specific instructions. 4. The network setup should be complete.
If you need more help, let me know by replying to this solution. Thank you for using FixYa!

I HAVE 22 MBPS OF WIRED INTERNET CONNECTION. I HAVE TRIED TO HOOK UP MY BLURAY PLAYER TO THE INTERNET WITH NO LUCK. MY ROUTER ONLY HAS 1 ETHERNET SLOT, SO I BOUGHT A DYNEX 4 PORT HUB TO EXPAND TO THE...

You mentioned in your question that you had a router. If it is actually a modem, then yes, you need a router.
The reason that the Ethernet hub is not working is that your modem will only give out 1 IP address to one device on the hub. With a router, the router uses the 1 IP address and shares access to the internet via that 1 IP address.
Yes, you'll need a router instead of a hub.

Set up difficulties

You sure can. Start w/ the Comcast modem as long as it is NOT a USB type and hooks using a CAT-5 cable (regular network cable). Hook the comcast modem to the WAN port of the wireless router. On the back of the wireless router use the normal 1-4 extra LAN ports to hook other computers or the SD208 switch to it and other computers from there.

Word of advise if using Wireless Router, be sure to read manual and set a KEY for your network to secure it from unwanted outside use.

Absolutely. The router will have an uplink port. It will indicate on the back. Hook the modem from sat to the uplink and the other 2 computers to the other ports. make sure the computers are on DHCP (they should be defaulted to it) and they should auto connect

WPA for linksys

I would guess you are entering something incorrect with your security. If the wireless adapter on your XBOX wants a WPA then the wireless it is picking up has security on it however, it may be incorrectly set using WEP or WPA radius. Here is what *I* would do. Log in to your wireless router and remove all security. Go back to your XBOX and look for the signal for your wireless network. Now try to connect. Wireless connections can be a pain to configure sometimes but start first with no security and work yourself up. IF you can't get it working with security, make up a goofy SSID with NO security but don't broadcast it then you can connect the manual way through your XBOX specifying the SSID (not broadcasted) and no security that should do it. (Just a side note for my XBOX I bought a cheap Belkin 4 port router made it an access point for my existing wireless network and hardwired my XBOX to it. Works fine.)

Router failed numerous times so i bought a netgear fs605 5 port switch to hard wire in a ps3 and my dell lap top. can only run one or the other. not both at the same time. what is wrong?

The FS605 is a switch, not a router. You can only run one device at at time because you only have one ip address. You need a router between the internet and your switch if you want to use more than one device at a time.

Be sure that you only enter the password admin - in small letters. The user name shuld be left blank (empty space).

This should work UNLESS you (or someonhe else) previously changed the password. Is this a brand new unit? If someone changed the password, you'll have to use the new password.

What Version is the the router? Did you buy it from a store?

Yes, but you'll need a crossover cable to connect the two routers. You could buy a hub or a switch. They are easier to configure and cheaper.
