GE Dss25KSRCSS Appliance started making a "whining" noise -- appears to be coming from freezer section. The noise ocillates in pitch, high to low like a wave when the freezer unit is running.

Sounds like your evaporator fan motor bearings are telling you it is time to replace the fan motor.

What is wrong when refrigerator makes a high whine periodicly?

HI,

The compressor moves the coolant through the unit, and the fan moves the air. Both have spinning motors that need lubricant to remain in good working order. When these items begin to fail, if they don't shut down completely, you will hear metal rubbing against metal, the high pitched noise. Normally these are sealed with plenty of lubricant and need no routine maintenance.

The bad news is there is not much you can do on your own. One fix that rarely works, but is worth a try because it is free, is to alter the balance of the appliance. Sometimes just raising the front or the back or the side shifts the weight in the offending motor off of the metal rubbing parts. Some appliances have adjustable "feet" that you can twist in or out for this purpose. Please don't tip the appliance so far that it is unstable. If this makes the whine go away, remember that this is only a temporary solution. It might last long enough for a repairman to replace the part, or it might last long enough to save up for a new appliance, but the whine will return.

Noise high pitch noise from the freezer on my side by side

Hi, Remove the rear inside freezer panel and you will be able to see the evaporator fan motor. The fan motor is what is squeeling.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

I am not posotive, but it sounds like you may have a piece of debris stuck in the fan underneath. You can check if you pull it out from the wall, make sure you unplug it as to not have the fan come on while you are toying. But thats what it sounds like. If that is not it, I am sure you could locate the noise with it pulled out from the wall, and go from there, Possibly your compressor, but sounds like the fan the way you're explaining it. Good luck
