Sounds like malware . save your important files to a usb drive, then do a factory restore, otherwise its a few hours for a tech to clean up. .. other possibilities include, processor getting too hot, or install /upgrade the ram memory to its max. maybe first go run some spyware cleaning utilities such as spybot or adaware, see what it finds / cleans first.

My computer recognizes this hard drive, but windows media player does not

With Windows Media Player open, hit the F3 key. You get an Add To Library window providing you with an option to sync folders from other sources...like an external hard drive.
Select the option to add My folders and those of others I can access. Then you click the Add button.
Now you can see the Add Folder window. Search for the folder where you stored your music on the external hard drive and select it. Then click the OK button.
This will add the selected folder on the external hard drive to the list of synced folders. Once the Add Folder window disappears, Windows Media Player starts syncing the music and adding it to it's library.

What do you mean you can't open files or folders? Are you saying the files or folders are not on the hard drive since it's blank? I think you've got a virus that has hidden your files and folders?

I'm not sure which operating system you have but you need to get to Folder Options.

In Windows XP you can click Start/My Computer. When My Computer Opens click Tools at the top of the window and then select Folder Options. When the Folder Options window opens, click the View Tab and scroll down and select Show All Hidden Files And Folders. Click OK then go click on your C: Local Drive and see if your folders and files are there. Hidden Folders will show up lighter than a normal folder.

Please try to change the view type of the Folders.

1. Click on view on the standard tool bar, select different views like, tiles, list, thumbanils etc.
2. open the harddrive, select search and search for all files and folders.
3. Connect same harddrive in other computer and check whether it detects all other folders.
If yes,
restart the computer and connect the hard drive again.

All the best!!

My laptop(running Vista) allows me to see a folder on my Seagate external drive but will not allow me to see the folder contents.

Is that the System Volume Information folder? If it is, you can't see the content of this folder as it's a system folder and it's related to the restore points your PC is creating for that hard drive.
Else, it may be that whoever created the folder has locked it so you cant open it without a password.
