Power on but nothing else

My HK 22 dvd player was working then I shut it off. When I turned it on again the power light comes on but nothing else. It does not light up where the dvd info is and the tray will not open and close. I tried unplugging it but still nothing. It will not shut off with the remote but eventually goes to stand by. Thanks in advance for any help.

Same problem, poer light is on but can't get door to open!

  • riflehill Jul 20, 2008

If you keep turning on and off it does eventually work. Very frustrating, but at least you can ge tthe disc out.

I have taken the cover off and unplug the leads. Seeing how many other people have this issue (see I now know that it is not a loose connection, but perhaps I was thinking a capacitor as it seems to get closer to turning on the more it is turned on and off.

    Hope this helps.

This email I tried to sent to Harman Kardon supportservice. Untill now their website does'nt let me sending it. Maybe later and I hope to find a solucion ofcourse.

Hello. for a few years I am very satisfied with the Harman Kardon equipment. What's happening now is that when I power off de DVD player and I want to switch it on It get's his power but does'nt go on with the menu. The display maintains empty. If I disconnect the player from the mainpower, and then plug it in again, the menu disapears. what can this be?
Thanks for you're support. Greetings, René

    turns on but anything else...

  • Anonymous Dec 16, 2008

I have had the same problem for over an year.

  • ramsay68 Dec 29, 2008

I have had this same problem for a while as well. It used to be unplug it and plug it back in for it to work, but now I have to do this several times. I contacted HK and they said they had never heard of this before and suggested I reset the device, which I did to no avail. Hopefully someone out there knows how to fix this because I really can't afford a new DVD player right now.

yup same problem first happend once in a while now everytime i have to unplug and plug it back in to get a display and for unit to run otherwise its just a blue light

  • bnsair Jan 03, 2009

Yes we have a HK 22 and we also had it happen occasionally and use to unplug the dvd to get something other than a blue light now it seems no matter how many times we unplug and reset we can not get the dvd to open or do anything but go from an orange to blue light????

Looks like we are going to have no option but to get something else other than a HK, this seems to be a problem with the DVD's and the help desk are in deniel about that!

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2009

yup - same problem here too. i initially had to turn the unit on/off about 3 times - it's now up to about 8 times before it starts working...

once it warms up, it's fine. but very frustrating!

My DVD22 did exactly the same. The solution mentioned by shelompidid not apply to me since my model already had the fix factory fitted.

The other problem mentioned on page 21 of the service manual did the trick for me, although the complaint does not seem to be directly relavant:

"Complaint: Will Not Read Disc; Other Functions May Be Disabled
See h/k service bulletins HK2004-03 and HK2005-02, as the issues covered there involve similar
Probable Cause: EC19 and EC20 (1000μf 16v capacitors) may be defective in the power supply. This can be checked by measuring the +3.3v and +5v voltages that are associated with EC19, 20 to see if they are low (more than 0.1v low). The SPMS output voltages are marked on the PCB adjacent to the large 13 pin header. While there is only one 3.3v pin, there are several +5v pins, and care should be taken to measure the correct one(s), which are either two +5v pins approximately in the center of the header.

I could actually see on the power supply board that these two caps were damaged, although they were not completely popped. An additional cap which was damaged on my board was EC4.

When I measured the voltages the middle D +5V was reading about 4,6V. I did not expect a problem until I read the statement above on page 21 stating it should not be low by more than 0,1V. My A+14 and A-14 voltages also read about +/-17 to +/-18V.

I replaced all three caps: EC4, EC19 and EC20 with 25V caps instead of 16V caps. The voltage for D +5V now read exactly 5,01V! The A+/-14 read +/-16V (some improvement).

My unit is operating fine after replacing these 3 caps! I suspect that the damage to the caps could have been spikes on the AC suppy some stage, maybe due to lightning. Pretty amazing that only the power supply have damage and not the main pcb.

I copies this from the owner manual at page 28. I hope it will help.

"In the event you receive a DVD22 with the complaint: "The unit will turn ON with "POWER ON" in the
display, but the unit is locked up and will not read a disc, nor will pressing any button accomplish
anything, even the Power button", follow the instructions below.
(Behavior is intermittent; unplugging the AC power cord and replugging the unit in will sometimes reset it.)
Synopsis: Add a 4.7K ohm resistor to the indicated area on the bottom of the Main PCB.
CAUTION: The DVD22 is an electrostatically sensitive unit
and can be damaged by careless handling; you
must follow proper static control procedures to prevent damage to the DVD player.
1) Remove the eight plated screws holding the top cover to the unit; remove the top cover.
2) Remove the four molex connectors and one small FFC cable from the Main PCB.
3) Remove the five plated machine screws (top) and the five black screws (rear panel) from the Main PCB.
4) Remove the Main PCB from the unit.
5) On the reverse side (bottom), solder a 4.7K. 1/8W resistor (h/k part#299-4.7K or WLD5.630.472) to the
indicated area. (Attach one end of the 4.7K. resistor to one end of CB407, the other side, to a small
through-hole pad near the silkscreen label "CB410").
6) Replace the Main PCB and assemble the unit in reverse order.
7) Test the unit.

Not sure if I'm posting a second time, forgive me if so.

it does sound like a hardware problem, is it under warranty? I'd have it checked and possibly get repaired for free.

Harman kardon avr 140 - all displays work but no sound

I have an HK AVR140 all of the displays work, even shows when a digital connection from the Blu-Ray player is connected but no audio comes from the speakers! I found some information that HK does not have DC protection so when there is a problem muting Circuit is initiated on the main Amp. I called HK and they want me to send it in to a service dept that is not close at all. Any ideas? Or is there a way to by-pass the muting circuit somehow?

Harmon Kardon dvd5 player will not come out of the standby mode , will not power up.

hi lowone.

here is a review i got from or HK DVD5 users. Unfortunately HK cannot have the issue fixed over the phone, so the best way for you to resolve the issue is to bring the unit to an authorized dealer and have it repaired. a replacement is also possible depending on how well your unit came in.

I admit it, I am very partial to HK products. I own 2 of their receivers (one of these for 2 years, the other for 6, and they both

work beautifully), but as far as dvd players go, they have done a very shoddy job in terms of lasting power. The first unit that I bought lasted almost a year (to the day). Then one day, the unit wouldn't come out of standby mode, with a few dvds trapped inside. HKs techs couldn't help on the phone, and they had me drive down to New Jersey to an authorized dealer, who kept it for 2 months (these can only be repaired in CA at a specific HK repair shop it seems). After making a bit of a stink, HK sent me a refurbished model. I've used this one about 15 months, but now this one is starting to act flakey. The picture will start to stutter, and break up, then will stop completely. This is on pristine discs with no smudges or scratches. I have reset the processor, but this doesn't affect the problem. So now, I don't know how About Schmidt ends, because the player encountered these problems towards the end of the movie. Very aggravating. I spent about $500 for this, then had the long drawn out problems with getting the unit repaired, and when all is said and done, these played for about a year each before problems were encountered. HK definitely has to work on improving the longevity of their dvd players. Until then, I think I will shop for a different brand, since this one is on its last legs.

Hope this helps,

DVD player froze, now only turns off

Sounds like the power supply in the dvd player has failed. It works just well enough to turn on the led infront but as soon as you go to do anything it shuts off. This is common in cheaper dvd players. Unless you can troubleshoot electronics. Or know someone that can. Your best bet is to unplug the unit and disassemly and retrieve your dvd.
