This unit does not play HDDVDs, only standard DVDs. It mentions HDTVs because it upscales standard DVDs to HDTV resolutions. This means you get a better picture from regular DVDs but cannot play HDDVDs.

Toshiba has announced that the HDDVD as a format is dead anyway, BluRay is the HD disc format to get these days.

Go here: http://www.blu-ray.com/players/ for a list of bluRay players.

    HD DVD discs can offer both the current DVD and HD DVD formats on one disc, which means that special HD DVD discs will play in older DVD players as well as new high definition players.

Hello there.

Push "Play/Pause" and "DVD Rec" on the dvd recorder a few seconds to see the service menu. There you can find your firmware version.

Post back the version for us.

Hope this helps.

My Samsung smart tv & my dvd/bluray player recorder I bought at same time. Haven't had blurays til now & wont play at all. Rental ones did now I've bought my own & they don't play!Not tech minded.HELP

Each DVD player is assigned a code for the region in which it's sold. For example USA/Canada are Region 1 players. DVD players will refuse to play discs not coded for its specific region. In effect, this means that a DVD purchased in one country is normally unreadable on a DVD player bought in another region.

If your rental DVDs work in the player then there is nothing wrong with your DVD player. If you have purchased DVDs that do not work the problem is with the DVDs you have, not with the DVD player.

We want to convert our US DVDs to work in a UK "LG" DVD player.

Rather than converting all your DVDs, it may be better to find a DVD player which will play both kinds of DVDs, NTSC and PAL. They are available. If you do want to convert the discs, probably a video conversion service would handle that but it would cost you for each disc, probably $10 each and they may not convert any commercial DVDs. These services are usually available locally or you can mail off the DVDs to one in large metro areas.

Of course you need the dual power, 110V for USA and 220V for UK.

How do I play DVD on the BlueRay player?

According to the Vizio website, your VBR231 CAN play DVDs the same way a lot of Blu-Ray players can. The site blurb suggests the VBR231 is backwards compatible - which means your player should be able to play DVDs as well as Blu-Ray. Generally, most Blu-ray players can play DVDs if they are backwards compatible with them.

I do know Blu-Ray discs will NOT work in most standalone DVD decks.

MODEL NUMBER: VBR231

*Model Features:
* Full HD 1080p Video Playback
* Integrated Dual Band Wi-Fi - 802.11n
* 7.1 Digital Audio Output
* Backwards Compatible (see below)

*Compatibility:
* Plays Blu-ray and DVDs, Audio CDs, MP3s and Jpegs
* Multi-Channel 7.1 Audio Output via HDMI
* Playback and Enjoy Media via back USB Input (JPEGs and MP3s)

*Outputs:
* HDMI 1.3
* Component Video (YCrCB)
* Composite Video
* Stereo Audio
* Coaxial Audio
* Optical Digital Audio

I hope that helps somewhat.

Hi, I bought this LG RC897T 2 years ago and have only used the DVD player about 60 times. I've bought original "US" TV Box set dvds and Chinese knock-offs, and wrote my own dvds and they all...

Hello Mark. Most likely your player is regionalized and not compatable ith those DVD's that won't play. To eliminate the regional setting on your player go to this link http://www.wisebread.com/make-your-dvd-player-region-free-in-seconds

It contains the step by step instructions on how to make your player region free. It also has an how to video and a full explanation of why the regionalization was installed in the first place. Joe

Thanks for choosing Fixya!

Lg da3520 home cinema system refuses to play DVD discs. It has no problem playing CDs but DVDs it either says "Check Disc" or "Disc Error" or continues to attempt to load the disc but...

you have probably to clean up your dvd player with a clean up CD. After that if your dvd player doesn't want to read a dvd but play a cd, your laser output must be to fix. you'll have to go to a specialist.

My dvd player will not play HD-DVDs it is an HD DVD player

This dvd player doesnt' play HD DVD's it has a HDD which is short for Hard Drive. Which means you can use it like a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) to record your favorite shows and things like that.

Does this answer your question? If not i'm not sure what you're trying to ask could you be a little more elaborate?
