Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

My Kirby G 2001 upright vacuum wont turn on. I tried another outlet and still nothing. I don't see a breaker switch anywhere. If you know of any common problems I would love to hear them. I am very mechanically inclined, I just was wondering if there are any common issues with the motors or power switches etc. so I don't waste a lot of time troubleshooting. Thanks

This might sound a bit silly but check to see if the cord is plugged into the machine correctly if it is check to see if the safety interlocks are all engaged.

Kirby does not turn on

First be sure the bag assembly and head are tightly installed on the motor unit. Safety switches prevent operation with the fan or motor outlet exposed. If this isn't the problem there are 3 possibilities. 1 - defective cord, 2 - defective switch, or 3 - worn carbon brushes in the motor.

I was using kirby g5 and I think I stepped on cord and lost power on vacuum. Now it won't start. Could this be a damaged cord..or what?

either that, or it was pulled so hard, it came disconnected from the vac switch. stepping on a cord rarely affects power. so, check vac switch and outlet to make sure the outlet has power.

(if you know an electrician or if you feel comfortable disassembling the vac i would look at the point that the cord enters the vac and trace it to the switch looking for obvious breaks)

My kirby generation 3 wont come on

Make sure cord is not damaged. Check to see nothing is blocking hose or carpet nozzle(where beater brush is or brush roll). Plug unit in to a receptacle that you know has power going to it. (Lamp you know works when plugged into same. Using hose on front, make sure bag bottom completely attached to exhaust, the hose has a little arm like thing that will depress the safety switch on the front of the unit, and turn on using foot switch at the back of the unit. If these do not work, it could be one of two safety switches, dirt may have fouled or switch may need to be replaced.
