I had the same issue... almost... I had an exhaust valve sticking. It stuck closed and bent the push rods and it ran awful... could barely get it to crank. It was only running basically on one cylinder. I bought a head kit for the side I needed from jacks small engines.com and new push rods and valves and removed the engine then the oil pan and camshaft and replaced the valves and rebuilt it all. Make sure if a valve is sticking you get an oil pan gasket as well because that's the only way to get to it is taking the engine out and the oil pan
