Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

It appears that an intake valve may be stuck on my Briggs & stratton engine, It is back firing through the carb. Was running fine & then started this. It is very hard to turn over as well, but does start & running poorly. How can I fix this problem without big expense.

I had the same issue... almost... I had an exhaust valve sticking. It stuck closed and bent the push rods and it ran awful... could barely get it to crank. It was only running basically on one cylinder. I bought a head kit for the side I needed from jacks small engines.com and new push rods and valves and removed the engine then the oil pan and camshaft and replaced the valves and rebuilt it all. Make sure if a valve is sticking you get an oil pan gasket as well because that's the only way to get to it is taking the engine out and the oil pan

My briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard model 356447 will not start just back fires through the carb. I have good comprssion and spark at both plugs. I replaced the flywheel key as thought the backfireing...

check intake valves for proper seating. If the valves do not close completely it will allow the engine to backfire thru the carb. Another possibility is internal timing caused by the misalignment of the timing gears between the crankshaft and cam gears.

Vanguard backfires through carb

If you say the valve stems were bent..first did you find out what bent them they just bend...and is the valve face seat damaged..if they were not...your engine is out of time or you did not set the valve stem lash when replacing them this allows the intake valves to be open slightly under the firing stroke firing back through the carb and intake...you should have around four thousands of an inch clearance when the springs are completely relaxed and and you should be able to wiggle the valve rocker tappits ...check that if they are correct your engine is out of time..good luck

17.5 hp briggs and stratton mower - mowing fine - stopped to gas up - will not start back up - back fires a few times while turning motor over

sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.

Fuel problem with John Deere 23hp engine

time to pull the hose off the fuel pump coming from the tank and drain the tank and check flow of gas coming from tank hose, and possibly inline fuel filter is plugged or there is junk in your tank/line from tank not letting enough fuel to run to pump so pump can pump it to carb !

Carb shooting air and fuel out top instead of taking in air

Get an air filter made from foam or paper. The ion ones don't work well.

Also sounds like an intake valve is stuck open. When piston comes up it pushes air/fuel back out through the carb. Do a compression test on both cylinder to confirm this.

Briggs & Stratton 60200 series engine intake valve tar

I'm having the exact same problem with a Briggs & Stratton 80202 engine on my Mclane reel mower. I cleaned out the valves and cylinder head, put it back together and it runs nicely. I ran it for about a half hour then turned it off to adjust the blade. A couple hours later I went to start it and no compression. The Intake valve is stuck open with gum from running it for a half hour! The can of gas I have is less than a month old. I'm going to try a different brand of gas.
