Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have 3 computers access the internet through a network controlled by a D-Link DIR-300 router. 2 run W7 Home premium with IE8, they are Rick-PC and Video-PC. Rick-PC can access the Internet while Video-PC cannot! Yet Video-PC has access to Rick-PC. When I press the "e" key, there is a 1 sec response (the key highlights) then nothing, no message of any kind! -- The only difference I can find in their settings is that Video-PC is part of the "mshome" network, while Rick-PC is not. I am considering re-installing IE8, but where to get it without all the junk attached? Cheers Rick Nauta

    Hi drifterK,
Thank you for your extensive response, but it is beside the point. Video-PC is connected to the Router, as they all are. This setup has worked for many months until it suddenly failed. The network configuration shows the correct internet connection through the router, any diagnostics fail to come up with something useful, yet the Internet is as dead as a doornail!

Hi drifterK, I might have another clue:
I am trying to run Acronis Disk Director 11 for the first time and I get an error : cannot connect to "localhost" Rick Nauta

drifterK, I have done a system restore going back to 31July and the Internet connection is working again! Thanks for your suggestion, Rick Nauta

I think that the problem is not internet explorer ..but the way you connected the video -pc ...try to connect it in one of the router's ports ..directly with a Local area connection ..from the Lan card ..into one of teh ports...and after that open the lan card ..(click on the 2 monitors in the tray system ) ..and than properties..and than choose form the list TCP/IP protocol..
first let the settings onthe protocol with obtain an IP address automatically ...and see if it is connected already ..
if it is not..take a look into the settings of the one that works ..(in the same place ..just click on the 2 monitors..and than on the support window..it will show you exactly the Ip addreses and all the configuration ..
choose the use the following IP addresses..
insert all the same configuration to all but the Ip address (the first line)..
the IP address has to be in acording with the port in which is inserted..for example ..if it is in the next port near the one that works ..add ! to the last digit of the others Ip address..
ex..the router will be ...192.168.1.1
the first computer in the first port will be ..192.168.1.2
or whatever is set..
and the next one will be 192.168.1.3..
these are just the examples you just insert it in the next port and try automatically first , if it do not connect ..than look at the one that works ..choose manually configuration ..and add one more unit to the last digit in the opters IP address..and it has to work ..
This way ..they will be in parallel and the speed will not be affected ..this is the correct way to connect multiple computers to the router ..

am I to understand that when you said that the other one is connected and this one connected trough it ..you meant that the other one is the admin that you used to make the settings ..and this one is connected to one of the ports ....
in this case the local host is the router ..and the issue is on the local area connection settings ..keep in mind that sometimes it is enough a automate update to the network driver to mess things up..
My advice in this case is to use system restore..and get it back to the settings on a date that you remember it worked....and get back to me and let me know how it worked out ..
to get to system restore(if you run XP ) ..go to start ..all programs ..accessories..system tools ..system restore..and go for it ..click restore to an earlier date ..next ...choose the date from the calendar ..(you have to choose a highlighted one ...and next to start it ..it will try to do it ..and if it succeed the settings will get back like in that day that functioned ....
if the data are not accurate and the restore fails..you will have to reconfigure it ..and first to reinstall the lan driver to be sure that no update messed around with it ..and the easiest way to do that ..is t go to device manager //(right click on my computer ..properties...hardware ..device manager ...
in here look for network ..and locate the network adapter ..and even if it is not in yelow so it has a driver ..right click on it ..than properties..than driver ..and in this window click rollback driver ...In case it was an update for the driver and now it is not functioning ..it will get it back ..
If this is not functioning either ..just insert the cd ..and reinstall the network adapter ..(Lan Card ) ..and you'll be sure it is ok ...after that take a look and see how the settings are made on the one it works .and make the same on this one ..except like I said the IP address

OK...Im glad it worked out ..I was almost sure that an update was messing out with your driver ..the restore probably put it back ..My suggestion is to go to control panel ...open automatic updates and stop them ..to avoid this happen again ...It will display a warning with a red triangle all the time ..but it is harmless..
By the way ..if your problem is solved I will appreciate if you vote the problem solved ..so that cashing in by the others that answered the problem to be avoid..
Thank you for using Fixya ..!have a nice day ..

I want block 2 site so plz send mail.

You need to access the Setup page of Dlink DIR 300 wireless router:
1. Use a working computer that is hard wired to the router.
2. Open a Web Browser (IE, Firefox etc.) on the computer.
3. In the address bar of the browser type http://192.168.0.1 and press Enter.
4. When the login window appears, set the user name to admin and leave the password box empty. Click OK to continue.
(Note: If you setup your own Usename and Password on your router please use those info to login instead of using the default)
You will then see the Setup page of the router.
5. CLick on the ADVANCED tab.
6. On the left side of the screen Click on Parental Control.
7. On the "Configure Parental Control below: " select the option "Turn Parental Control ON and DENY computers access to ONLY these sites".
8. ON the "Website URL" tyoe in the website that you want to block
9. Click on the Save settings button.

Once completed then the sites you entered are completely denied and blocked on your router.

DIR-300 router and broadband ISP connection,is NAT possible?

With a cable broadband connection, the cable line comes into the cable modem. The cable modem does the work changing the cable signal to a network connection and sends an I.P. address to the computer. With some cable internet providers you can hook the network cable into the in port on a router, wireless or wired, then hook up computers to the router. At this point the router gets the IP from cable and uses it's own IP routing for your internal network. Some broadband providers control your access by the computers mac address which registers with the vendor. If this is the case then the easy way to make it work is to get a router which can clone a mac address so the vendor still sees the same mac address.

Dlink dir 300 internet problem

First you have to make sure that you connected it correctly. the cable coming out of the modem should be connected to the single port (Internet port) at the right when facing the back of the router.

All computers that are wired through it should be able to access the internet. if one of your computers cannot access the internet you may want to check the IP address that you are getting. (go to a command prompt and type ipconfig).

If you are connecting a wireless computer check the wireless security setting which you can find at the configuration (setup) page of the router. to access the configuration page check the owner's manual.
